EMILY BRISK 15 - Interrupted Meeting

It is an upbeat day for Emily Brisk. In some ways this is her day! Emily and her team of experts have been working on a project for five years. She was so pleased to see that her team continued the preparations and testing while she was off and in the hospital for so long. With her return two months ago everything was finally wrapped up together. Now she was presenting it all to a group of hand picked potential clients in an extremely top secret meeting. She was just finishing, "just to summarize, we have been talking about the total downloading of a person's mind into the internet while they are are still actively living. That person will have all of their senses connected. As our program would fully evolve more of a person's brain would be accessed, activated and enabled to employ various sources available on the internet. This further enriches and expands their very daily existence. Even alone, people will be able to communicate with others or keep dabs on situations elsewhere without using a computer or comparable device. Although we can't guarantee immortality, a person with our system would remain conscious in the internet long after the demise of their own mortal coil. People could actually study and analyze their own physical deaths. That will challenge the whole concept of life and death; something that could change the very nature of human existence, An individual's corporeal limitations will be continuously challenged. Some of our specialists believe that, with our system, people could function normally while suffering through diseases like Alzheimer's. We haven't gotten to that stage in our research yet." A visiting potential investor from Germany interrupted, "Why not guarantee immortality? We now have several supercomputers, like the new own we have in Europe. There is a tremendous amount of power and information on the internet now. This system might potentially enable people to last for centuries as conscious individuals in the internet!" Beaming with enthusiasm, Emily continued, "Let's be cautious about what can accomplish, or at least what we claim we can accomplish. Human life, at least with our system may very well change forever. It may ultimately depend upon how long will the internet really last." A lady from the United Kingdom asked, "What did you mean with the term 'superkids'?" Emily answered, "That is connected to the plan to offer the program to families where the parents would have their young children connected. Young minds would quickly learn how to access information of the web expanding their knowledge even faster that that offered by conventional education and the addictive usage of various screens. Imagine whole new generation of young minds with tremendous knowledge in their formative years. That's where the 'super kids' concept comes from. Such connection at early ages could further promote their access to other parts of their brains." The British delegate continued, "Be that the case with a certain considerable popularity of this system, the whole education system would have to adapt, requiring whole new positions and more jobs." At that point, Emily continued, "It is at least possible that the dominance of companies like Microsoft and Google is not going to last forever," All of the guests from companies in various parts of the world were laughing and chatting amongst themselves like excited school children. After a few awkward moments of busy chatter, Emily asked again if there were any other questions. After all she had been presenting for over four hours. Although the delegates had enjoyed a couple of breaks with refreshments, Emily was beginning to worry that it might have been too long. A woman from a highly successful company in the "Silicon Valley" stood up to say the oddest thing: "Ms. Emily Brisk! I have been sitting here stunned by what your company is doing! This has been the most outrageous five hours of my career! Only idiots would not want to get directly involved. If this venture succeeds, you are going to change the very nature of the internet. Billions of people; with your system, would seamlessly communicate with each other in their minds without even talking. The days of telephones and internet things like Windows and emails would be numbered. Daily life may change!" A group of Japanese delegates were laughing and smiling. One of them stood up to ask, "What about nationalities? Borders would further become irrelevant." Emily cautioned people about getting too excited: "We are at the early stages in the development of the system. Five people have had the download and connection completed with very promising results. Problems have been minimal. Let's just not get too excited about it quite yet. Many issues have to be solved. The nature of potential relationships we hopefully establish today will determine timelines, the quality of effectivity of service, prices. There are a multitude of details that have to be attended to." A delegate from Italy stood up and asked, "What about artificial intelligence? Could not the constant increase of the use of A.I. complicate this system?" Emily quickly answered back, " I have specific ideas about artificial intelligence..." Suddenly Mylene Sears opened the door apologizing to the whole room. She was accompanied by two company lawyers and Fiona Adlers who was one of the first five to have the system. She thanked Emily for the whole meeting and production, "As we suddenly require her attention elsewhere, I have to ask all of you wonderful people to thank our Emily Brisk for preparing and chairing this information session!" All 76 people in the hall quickly jumped up to give Emily a standing ovation that lasted five minutes. Emily was taken aback by it. Mylene Sears introduced the lawyers that were going to remain in the hall to talk about legal technicalities. She also introduced Fiona Adlers. She said that Fiona will talk to the crowd about her experiences as one of the first successful persons to have the download. As Mylene escorted Emily down the hallway towards the elevator, she warned her of the circus downstairs waiting for her. Remembering how she had literally walked away from that Homeland Security compound in the mountains of New Hampshire a little over two months before, Emily suddenly felt a little nervous. As the elevator opened on the first floor Emily could instantly see John Polke and some of the 'specialists' from Homeland Security. There was also Dora Fuentes and her sister Nancy from the F.B.I., Her fears seemed to be coming about. The 'specialist' Isaac Smith was standing facing John Anderson, the company's head of security. They looked extremely tense like two bulls ready to battle. Emily quietly said to Mylene as they entered, "I really don't need this crap right now!" Before Emily got close to the waiting crowd, Mylene asked everybody if they could all move into the nearby cafeteria. She didn't want any of the guests upstairs to come down and potentially run into Homeland Security people. Mylene stood right beside John Anderson and said. "Let's be peaceful folks. Emily is very busy today. She is here now to talk and answer questions only." Mr. Anderson accompanied the crowd to the empty cafeteria. He intended to stay. As far as he was concerned nothing was going to happen to Emily on his watch. Emily quickly went over to her sister and gave her an affectionate hear hug. She then turned to Dora and the approaching Dona and politely said, "I can't go anywhere folks. I have a conference room full of business people from all over the world. I need to return to them soon," John Polke walked over and said, "Happy to see that you're ok, Ms. Brisk. You had suddenly disappeared from our compound. At the time we didn't know whether you were dead or alive. Agents spent days searching the nearby mountains for you!" Emily answered with a defensive tone, "The main Doctor said that I was "good to go" He even suggested that I take a long walk. I walked away and eventually got back to work. I am very secure with Mr. Anderson and his team. Everything is alright!" Mr Anderson politely added, "This corporation has authorized my team to provide twenty four hour protection. Emily is escorted to and from work with armed escorts." Dona and Nancy collectively clarified that they knew that Emily was alright,. Nancy insisted that being an identical twin enabled her to feel that her sister was alright. Dona stood there smiling, deliberately neglecting to tell Emily that Ajinder Gill had placed a tracking with Emily back at Lennox Hill Hospital just in the case she was kidnapped. John Polke evidently didn't know that. The crew up in the mountains didn't even know it. There was actually an awkward distance between the "specialists" and the rest of the Homeland Security people in the New York City area and New England regions. Polke couldn't get clearance for Dona and her fellow "specialists" to physically inspect the massacre scene in Long Island City. That had irritated Dona who was certain that there were valuable clues missed. Dona wasn't convinced that Polke and his assistants found everything. In a hurry to return to her meeting, Emily asked, "So what is it that you all so urgently want?" The ladies and John Polke sat around a table. Dona took out a photograph of an African-American gentleman standing outside of the store in Boston where Emily had gone into to buy a sun dress. Dora asked if Emily had ever seen him. Emily sat staring at the picture of the well dressed man. She suddenly said, "Yes I remember that man. His name is Arthur Simms I believe. I took a brief vacation in Cape Cod one week before Nancy and I went to New York and I ended up getting shot. I spent most of my days there camped out by the beach enjoying the ocean just as I had on that island. Suddenly one day that gentleman came walking by out of nowhere all fully dressed in a suit like that. I remember thinking how strange it all was. He was very friendly and pleasant. He just said the strangest thing went he departed about checking to see if I was ok." Dora confirmed that his name was Arthur Simms and that he owned the thrift shop where Nancy had bought that radio. Emily was quite surprised that a man that would approach her at Cape Cod was somehow connected to the experience she had suffered. Dora continued, "There are so many questions about this man. Fatima, the employee at the shop who found you when you returned, she knows him well and says he regularly brought old cameras into the shop for Catriona's husband. We believe this Mr. Simms is somehow involved with your kidnapping. How did that radio ever get on that mysterious island otherwise?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- . . .
