What a day!!!!
A long day indeed... today started early with attendance to the funeral for Empress. A bitterly cold morning.. where normally these temps would have me locked in my house. Heat cranked.. fireplace a blaze and hot chocolate on the go. But today... required time to pay last respects and to say farewell to this beloved woman in our community. Tears, laughter, sadness and grace were felt throughout the day. Someone remarked to me that you could feel a positive energy although through such a sorrowful time. And I had to agree. Standing room only at Kellys Funeral Home. I think Empress would have been happy.. seeing so many loved ones together sharing memories, stories and the saddness of saying farewell. Truly a reminder that we are all slipping away in our own time. Tomorrow is not promised was the repeated theme... so live.. live now and let God and love lead the way.
It was sooo nice to see and bump into people that i hadn't seen for years. So many hugs and smiles and greetings that made the day much more... hmm.. not sure what the word is here but... better than the tears. (sounds like a Christopher Martin song.. better play that tonight haha). Anyway, the race now after the reception, to get home, gather my thoughts and plan something I thought you might enjoy for this Sat. night. Of course, the snow had already started to fall and the roads were greasy to say the least. So... slip slidin' away to do what I can to warm things up... melt some of the snow if you will and through the magic of music, lift your moods; as I know many of you were affected by Yolanda's passing and funeral earlier in the day.
One song that was played at the reception that I "felt" was George Nooks, a song called "Ride Out Your Storm". And i knew the moment that I heard it at the reception.. it had to play tonight. Following that, it seemed a logical flow to then play Don Campbells "The Storm Is Over" and what I find a real uplifting and positive song, Osmond Collins "I Feel Better" to round out the first set which we reserve for positive, uplifting tunes.
Tonights show included a short set of some Ska to get the feet moving, featuring a classic from Millie with "My Boy Lollipop" and a Ken Boothe and Stranger Cole collaboration which churned out the song, "Artibella". Also some Wailing Souls in there with "Love Or Affection".
The rest of the night included Norma Frazer, The Heptones, Boris Gardiner, Cynthia Schloss and Bitty McLean. During the weather break we heard Teddy P. and the birthday girl herself, the one and only Sade Adu, who turned 61 two days ago. I love Sade! Another person I need to see in concert as soon as possible. Anyway, I digress...
The Manhattans with a song you alllll could sing along with and I hope you did. "Kiss And Say Goodbye". As we rounded the corner heading towards the end of this edition of Vintage Love, we heard Carlene Davis, Samantha Rose, a double spin of Beres and we ended the show with Lloyd Brown.. a fitting tune for tonight called, "Cold" and of course as I mentioned above... Christopher Martin with "Better Than The Stars" as we said good night.
Thank you to all who called and messaged thanking me for coming in to do the show despite the weather and driving conditions and wishing me a safe trip home. I say every year during the annual Funding Drive.... through sleet, snow, rain or moonlit, starlit skies... we come in to provide you with an alternative to commercial radio... and this is hopefully one of the reasons you donate.. and support...because we do this for you. Would I love to stay home in my bed tonight.. fireplace goin', roasting marshmallows?!! Sure... but not as much as I love coming out to play music for you so that maybe you can do the same with Vintage Love in the background in your own homes.
Thank you again for tuning into CKCU 93.1FM and I hope you enjoyed Vintage Love tonight. If you happen to be listening after the original live broadcast, On Demand. You can always let me know how you enjoyed the show.. or not, by leaving a message on the Interactive Menu as it is still open for any negative or positive but respectful comments.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable week ahead. Looking forward to spending more time with you enjoying music, next Saturday night. Same time, same place Jah willing.
Have yourselves a good night and a better tomorrow,
:-)
