Brand new release from Hossein Alizadeh with the Rembrandt Trio, with a unique combination of instruments. Made Kuti's latest album and more!
Today we will hear some very rare, dare I say unique, sounds from a new recording by the Rembrandt Trio. The Rembrandt Trio is an unusual jazz trio from the Netherlands led by Rembrandt Frerichs, with Tony Overwater and Vinsent Planjer. They do perform as a standard jazz trio with piano, double-bass, and drums, but they also perform with more unusual instruments, as they do on this album. Rembrandt Frerichs performs on a 1790 replica fortepiano, which is drastically different from any modern grand piano built after 1860. With the fortepiano's lighter, more delicate sound he is able to simulate the sound of the Persian santur. Tony Overwater performs on the violone, which is a large viol, the Baroque family of bowed instruments. Visnent Planjer performs with the "Whisperkit" which is a drumset featuring a diverse group of percussion instruments. They have performed using this instrumentation with the great Kayhan Kalhor and recorded an album in 2015, released in 2019 (which can be heard on earlier shows on-demand here: https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/43507.html

Much to my surprise and delight they just released another album, this time with another titan of Persian music, Hossein Alizadeh. Hossein Alizadeh turns 70 this year and in his long career he has been at the forefront of Persian music on the tar and setar. He has performed solo, with the top ensembles, and has accompanied the greatest singers such as Mohammad Reza Shajarian and Shahram Nazeri. He has composed concert and film music, and has taught new generations of musicians.
With the Rembrandt Trio, Alizadeh also performs on an unusual instrument, the shurangiz, a custom instrument built to his specifications which serves as the midpoint between the tar and setar. So the overall instrumental mix in this new album "Same Self, Same Silence" is something completely new and unique. They perform a number of compositions by Alizadeh and members of the Trio all based on Dastgah Nava (one of the oldest modes in Persian classical music). The sound is rooted in Persian music combined with a Baroque European classical sound as well as American jazz. An incredible album!

Sam Shalabi has a new single out available on Bandcamp. In his own words:
"This is a solo oud version of "Lonely Woman" by Ornette Coleman. I've loved this melody ever since I first heard it over 30 years ago. A while back, I had the idea of playing and recording it on oud – the melody has always struck me as very Arabic/Middle Eastern sounding – it has a sobbing/emotional feeling that you hear in certain kinds of Arabic vocal music and modes. It's only recently though that it has made sense to attempt a version of it. I've been exploring the idea of covering Free Jazz 'standards' that could work on oud and would have an emotional resonance on the instrument (I've recently recorded versions of "Ghosts" by Albert Ayler and "India" by John Coltrane ). This is what led me back to this piece... I recorded it at home in Montreal with one microphone and one take." https://samshalabi1.bandcamp.com/track/lonely-woman |

Femi Kuti and his son Made Kuti have their new albums released together as Legacy+. Made Kuti plays all the instruments on his album, while I believe Femi's features a band. They both show a different approach to Fela Kuti's Afrobeat legacy. Femi's new album hews more closely to his father's music while Made's is more contemporary. Both are excellent! The last track on Femi's album and the first track on Made's album have similar titles, I wonder if this was intentional. |

Hossein Alizadeh's composition "Torkeman" is certainly a favourite of his, I have a number of different recordings with him playing it with different instrumentation and even vocals. |
