Kayhan Kalhor's latest cross-cultural collaboration with the Dutch Rembrandt Frerichs jazz trio. Cosmic jazz, Cuban beauty and Peruvian psychedelic Cumbia.
Kayhan Kalhor's brand new album features musicians he first met and started collaborating with in 2013, the Dutch trio featuring Rembrandt Frerichs on piano, Tony Overwater on bass, Vinsent Planjer on drums. It is clear they have spent considerable time working on their sound together, choosing uncommon instruments to better form a unique whole. Kayhan Kalhor plays the kamencheh of course, Frerichs plays on a fortepiano, with its lighter and more delicate tone he is able to mimic a Persian santur at times, Overwater plays the violone, an early Baroque bass viol, and Planjer plays a wide range of percussion instruments. The resulting sound is extraordinary, it sounds both completely natural yet otherworldly. Their album is entitled "It's still Autumn" featuring two suites with composed music linked with improvisation and its achingly beautiful music sings of deep sorrow and loss. Perhaps it would be better suited to listening during a cold and grey late-October day, but I cannot wait that long to share this stunning album!

The Ottawa Jazz Festival begins tomorrow and we start the set with a true legendary star, Cuba's Omara Portuondo, who at 88 years old (!!) is on her self-declared final tour. She is playing the jazz festival next Friday, June 28th.
https://ottawajazzfestival.com/artists/omara-portuondo/ We also hear some psychedelic Cumbia from the Cumbia All Stars, more amazing guitar from Mdou Moctar (appearing in Ottawa July 26th https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/soul-sole-live-sessions-e2-mdou-moctar-tickets-60892818058 ) and a new album from the Italian Gabriele Mitelli and American Rob Mazurek who with their alto sax, picollo trumpet and electronics draw on inspiration from Sun Ra but prove that you don't always need a large band to take your jazz to Cosmic heights. |

Anoushka Shankar and one of my favourite violinists Patricia Kopatchinskaja playing together in a centennial celebration of Yehudi Menuhin's 100th birthday in 2016. They perform Rag Piloo which violinist Menuhin recorded with Ravi Shankar many years ago. |
