Electric Guitars Over Africa: electric guitar-driven music from west and central Africa, Niger, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, the Congo and elsewhere.
Today we'll hear a lot of electric guitar-driven music from Africa, particularly from Niger, Mali, Senegal, Mauritania, and the Congo. Inspired by the new release from Nigerien guitarist Mdou Moctar who will be appearing in Ottawa on July 26th! We will hear from a few other Tuareg groups who specialize in electric guitar from Niger and Mali as well as a look back at various Golden ages of African guitar from the Orchestre National de Mauritanie from 1968-75, Etoile de Dakar from 1978-82 and the absolute magic woven in the complex "sebene" of Franco and TPOK Jazz from the early 80's.

Settle in for mostly electric guitars from West Africa though with a healthy dose of amazing horns so it's not too monochromatic. Impossible to stay still! |

Dipping south into the Congo for a moment to hear the incredible Franco. 2019 marks 30 years since his early death at the age of 51. His music, especially the "sebene" when the various guitars and bass play ostinatos with occasional refrains from the horns could just go on for eternity. They are timeless, incomparable summits of African music. |

For me, this song by Tinariwen will always be the anthem of Tuareg guitar music, I can never hear it enough... |

Wanting to continue with the electrified theme, and something truly electrifying! The great Carnatic violinist Shankar and his double-necked electric violin. Music that burns white hot and truly, absolutely, shreds! |

David, this music is absolutely brilliant! Listening in on headphones and totally diggin' it!
