Montreal’s Derome, Goldstein, Wiens sound smiths
Jean Derome, a four decades Free-Jazz veteran, always Montreal based, is known for his well-defined concepts to produce sounds, musical phrases or entire compositions. His long term commitment to this music, including founding a recording label entirely devoted to it has attracted number of musicians to Montreal. Malcolm Goldstein is a heavy weight of the violin, extracting sounds that nobody could imagine possible. Rainer Wiens both deconstructs and reconstructs sound thanks to the combination of string instruments of both western including Rock and African origins.
The trio, produces soundscapes like the Saturnien composition that would have made Sun Ra green of envy. On the other hand, in Silence Habités, they manage silence as music, an old dream of many musicians going all the way back to Johan Sebastian Bach.
