Django Reinhardt’s experimentation with the electric guitar
What is the icon of Swing guitar doing on RWAC, the ultimate avant-garde radio show? Well, it is always a bad idea to pigeonhole a musician and lock him into a particular style. In 1946, Django went on tour with Duke Ellington and this led him to the avant-garde in two ways: first, Django played an electric guitar. He'd always played an acoustic guitar, amplified with mikes, not electrical pickups. Second, Django strayed into Be Bop, the definitive avant-garde of the time. Tonight we will explore a recording that documents this final period of Django’s life, thanks to the creativity of co-host Jim Reil.
