Don Cherry has been one of the central musicians of the ‘60s avant-garde, first with his association with Ornette Coleman and then Sonny Rollins, Paul Bley, Archie Shepp, Steve lacy and Gato Barbieri. In the ‘70s, there was some major soul searching and redirection happening among avant-garde musicians. Some opted for the new pop music oriented Jazz called Jazz Rock and others went for a different route exploring esoteric world music that was not yet well known at that time as it is today. Don Cherry seems to be fully committed to this exploration and tries to ensure that the listener gets something out of it. This includes associations with Brazilian Nana Vasconcelos, Manu Dibango, eventually driving him to associations with Pop music artists such as Jimi Hendrix and many more.
Tonight we will sample his 1972 recording Orient.
