Rabble Without A Cause
Wednesday November 16th, 2016 with Bernard Stepien
Swiss Trombonist Samuel Blaser

The trombone is almost an archaic musical instrument in Jazz. It goes back right to the beginning. It fell out of fashion when big bands vanished. However, its microtonal capabilities make it an ideal instrument for Free Jazz. Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser decided to play trombone at age 2 after watching a street parade. Later he played with all the visiting artists you can imagine. However, one particular interesting aspect of his music is the heritage of German trombonist Albert Mangelsdorf who could produce multiphonics by singing while playing. For those who follow the concerts organized by IMOO, he played a duo here in Ottawa with drummer Gerry Hemingway last September in front of the best crowd we had ever seen.
