New York – Toronto join forces: Way North concert preview
Mixing Jazz and Folk or World Music goes a long way, from John Coltrane’s exploration of Indian Ragas and modal music in the ‘60s to Phil Woods exploring Greek traditional music not too much later. Way North that includes saxophonist/clarinetist Petr Cancura with built-in Czech traditional music influences takes this exploration one step further by playing the New York City melting pot game. Each composition on their CD has an official ethnic content but the main thing is that they go beyond. There are well identified culprits to achieve that. Drummer Richie Barshay that plays frequently with Jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, both five or four decades in the process. That leaves a few imprints on how to stretch a tune… Bassist Michael Herring has a long experience with world music while leader/trumpeter Rebecca Hennessy could not avoid the Serbian Guča trumpet festival. Saxophonist Petr Cancura will be in the studio tonight to explain it all…
Way North will be performing at the Mercury lounge tomorrow, Thursday March 3rd.
