: the Sun RA Arkestra: The Antique Blacks, 1974

Sun Ra was an extreme Free Jazz visionary that was deeply rooted into the Jazz tradition, particularly of the Swing big bands of the ‘30s. Mixing Free Jazz of the sixties with ancient African rhythms and early electronics all with that essential swing still makes today’s tekno Djs green of envy. Tonight we will enjoy his 1974 recordings of the Antique Blacks that were released in 1978 and re-released in 2009. These recordings feature two unusual aspects of Sun Ra’s music: electric guitar and spoken words over intergalactic Moog synthesizer. The Ottawa local group Rakestar Arkestra will be performing works of Sun Ra at the Raw Sugar Café on Sunday, January 25th at 7pm.
