Berlin's Red Dhal Sextet

A quarter of a century after the fall of the wall and seemingly end of the cold war, Berlin is an increasingly thriving cultural hot spot, so much that the “cultural” tourists drive the rents and hotel prices literally through the roof. But this is good news for the masses of musicians who cross their paths in Berlin. Contrary to other Jazz hot spots in the world, Berlin is less focused on big names that do it all. Instead, local big names and unknown musicians that just arrived on the scene intermix constantly in endless new configurations and the good news is that Free Jazz is well and alive. The Red Dhal sextet is a good illustration. It is composed of only two somewhat local and German Berlin musicians, Alexander von Schlippenbach and Frank Paul Schubert. The others like Hilary Jeffery, Paul Dunmall, Mike Majokowski and Yorgos Dimitriadis are all visiting settlers. The result is a highly dynamic music where musicians share a common language but each bring their own original ideas to the pot and ensure that nobody falls into clichés.
