Records Central To Our Journey Of Discovery Of Jazz

For the only Funding Drive show for INSIDE JAZZ, Ron and Jim will each offer up a recording that has been central to their journey of discovery of jazz during their lives. In the first hour Ron will introduce an album recorded April 4&5, 1955 by the Serge Chaloff Sextet called BOSTON BLOW-UP. In the second hour Jim will play the record SHAKTI by the group Shakti with John McLaughlin, recorded live July 5, 1975. Two very personal recordings that are very different in many ways. I am also a big fan of baritone sax, Ron. BTW, believe it or not, CHEZ FM features a full vinyl classic rock album every Saturday night. I can't pull myself away from the Mighty these days to catch it anymore but I used to catch the odd installment when I was beer drinking. LOL

One of my great joys was working with Jacques at the Ottawa Jazz Festival. I used to take my holidays to volunteer for 14 days and was there for setup and teardown all day every day and practically slept on site. For the 15th Anniversary, I was hired on as Sponsorship Manager. Jacques was one of the kindest, sweetest guys i have ever met and an amazing walking library of jazz !!!!! I break into a huge smile everytime someone mentions his name.

This is the first album you guys have played that I had already heard. I have not heard this in years. I still remember exactly where I heard it the first time, where I sat on the floor in my friend's apartment and my jaw dropping to the floor. He just smiled at me knowingly since he was turning me on to John McLaughlin for my first time!!!!!

I completely agree with you Neil. He turned me on to so much great music. I would go on to take over his NIGHT TRAIN show when he reduced his activity at CKCU-FM after his heart attack. Such a kind and generous human being!

OMG Jim, where do you find this sh*t.......in-freakin-credible!! Days like this I feel that I have been living in a cave all these years

Ron Steeds (host)
Hey Ollie. I don't remember how I came across it but it still blows my mind. It's supposed to be impossible to play South Indian music at this level unless you studied for years with a guru!

Neil & DL
Indeed. I am sure you and I no doubt met over the years at the Jazz Festival.
