Leonard Sumner - Rez Poetry Canadian

Thursday, December 7th at the NAC, 8:30 pm
Tickets are $25, online plus Ticketmaster fees

Leonard Sumner is an Anishinaabe MC/Singer/Songwriter from the Little Saskatchewan First Nation, located in Interlake Region of Manitoba. He provides perspective from a voice often unheard and over-looked in the traditional music communities: truthful, insightful, and providing a new sound straight from ‘the Rez’.

His music is best described as a fusion of hip-hop, country and rhythm and blues. His lyrics are intricate and honest, combined with his message and heart, massage into a raspy flow that growls with a bittersweet existential angst. On stage, he captivates crowds with a guitar slung over his shoulder, singing and rhyming to the beats, allowing his style to be enjoyed by people who typically ‘aren’t into rap.’

Jack Pine aka Gareth Auden-Hole will open the evening.

Kamancello w/ Nathanael Larochette
8:00 PM on Saturday Dec. 9th

Kamancello, comprised of Shahriyar Jamshidi, kamanche and Raphael Weinroth-Browne, cello, is an East-meets-West duo that blurs musical genre conventions and cultural boundaries with their highly evocative improvised performances. The scope of their creations ranges from soulful and emotive to incendiary and intense, and their sound has been described as being "totally entrancing.” Having made waves with performances at Montreal's Place des Arts for Festival du Monde Arabe and Toronto’s Tirgan Festival at Harbourfront Centre, Kamancello released their critically acclaimed debut album in fall 2017.

Nathanael Larochette is an Ottawa based instrumental composer/guitarist and member of the chamber folk trio Musk Ox and the progressive folk metal band The Night Watch. In 2017 he released the double album Earth and Sky which explores solo acoustic and layered electric guitar textures. He has released eight albums and performed in ten countries.

Murder... At The Circus!
DEC 6th @ ByTowne Cinema
10:30pm PWYC / Free!
Facebook Event:
ByTowne Cinema Post:

"What did you see?" asks Murder... At The CIRCUS!, which invites the viewer into a dreamscape reality where the presence of the supernatural creates an uneasy tension. Murder... promises filmgoers the creepy delights of a sleepover ghost story, elevated by raw filmmaking techniques that leave ample room for the experience of the viewer.

Murder... exists almost in a void, relying on awe-inspiring performances from first-time actors with freedom from the constrictions of time. The characters are the "creatures of the underworld" reminiscent of those celebrated by Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge. The dark, troubled players are tenuously tethered to each other by the Circus, who is a character unto herself.

The intimacy of a soundscape free from dialogue bolsters a whimsical, quirky tale that celebrates ambiguity and the subconscious. Starring and created by past and present ByTowne staffers, Murder...manipulates footage filmed in small Ottawa spaces, including the ByTowne Cinema, to deliver magnified visuals and intensified experience of characters that will leave you wondering...what did you see?

Murder... evokes early David Lynch in a Guy Maddin universe. This nod to the silent film era is the second collaboration between Ottawa filmmakers Matt Miwa and Lesley Marshall, who bring humour and unrestricted creativity of form to this 3-year project.

"A unique emphasis on the artistic and the fantastic," (Eddie Spuhghetti - Horror/Retro Host)
