The Canadian Film Institute announces the launch of “Ottawa: Cinema Capital”, featuring the “Ottawa Home Movies” Reel.

Ottawa, Ontario, August 18, 2017- The Canadian Film Institute is holding a free outdoor public screening in Ogilvy Square on Friday August 25th from 8pm. This screening features the Ottawa Home Movies Reel, which is a montage made from a selection of home movie footage sent in by members of the public earlier this summer.

This event kicks off “Ottawa: Cinema Capital”, which is a series of screenings that celebrates Ottawa as the first hub of Cinema in Canada. These screenings will showcase films of various types, from documentary, to horror to recent works. This event will demonstrate the significance and diversity of the Ottawa film Industry.

"To see Ottawa over the years through the lenses of its citizens and their home movies will be an especially exciting component of our 'Ottawa: Cinema Capital' project. In addition to these home movies, this project will also showcase Ottawa's incredible ongoing history as a professional film production centre in Canada. Before Montreal and Toronto and Vancouver, Ottawa was actually the centre of filmmaking in our country, with groundbreaking and internationally renowned films shot, edited, and finished in our city," says CFI Executive Director, Tom McSorley.

Before the screening of the Home Movies Reel in Ogilvy Square, the Executive Director of the CFI will formally open the event. There will also be a draw for the prize of two Ambassador Memberships that will be awarded to one of the Ottawa Home Movies participants. Come see how fellow Ottawans have filmed our city, and stay tuned for information on the next event taking place late September to the end of 2017.

This project is funded by Ottawa 2017’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Program (stewarded by AOE Arts Council, Ottawa Arts Council and Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa).

Jane Carmichael and Elle Hermansen are sisters in spirit, if not in fact. Thanks to their friends, The Married, for sharing their video.

“electro-folk pop”– the perfect marriage of Carmichael’s folk sensibility and Hermansen’s electronic vibe.
