Art Battle is live competitive painting.
Painters create the best work they can in 20 minutes. As they work, patrons move around the easels, closely watching the creative process. The medium is acrylic paint and the tools allowed are brushes, palette knives or any non-mechanical implements. At the end of the round, the audience votes democratically for their favourite painting and bids in silent auction to take the work home.

8:15 am - We are joined in the studio by Robin Guy re: Anton in Show Business at The Gladstone Theatre starting Feb. 24th Three Sisters Theatre Company opens Anton in Show Business on February 24 at The Gladstone, unilaterally proving that women can be funny too! Anton in Show Business by Jane Martin follows the escapades of a theatre company attempting to produce Anton Chekhov’s classic The Three Sisters in San Antonio, Texas. All thirteen characters – of both genders – are played by the cast of seven Ottawa actresses, offering a kind of comedic opportunity that female actors seldom receive. “Even in very funny shows, the female character is most commonly the ‘straight guy,’” says Robin Guy, Producer for Three Sisters. “We don’t often get to be the really hilarious characters. Gender equity in theatre isn’t just about getting women on the stage – that’s only half the battle. The quality of the roles is important too. Most frequently, the story the female character is telling has to do with her relationship to a man. There’s nothing wrong with telling that story – romance is delightful! But if it’s the only story we’re telling about women on stage, we haven’t achieved much in terms of gender equality.” Anton in Show Business, on the other hand, offers female actors both hardcore comedic roles, complete with quick character changes, physical humour, and gender swapping, and single-character roles with both humour and heart. “There are no ‘decorative’ roles in this play,” says Guy, “every role has depth and substance. It’s a rare opportunity for seven female cast members to work together on a real ‘company show’.” And it’s not just the cast – the production team is nearly entirely female as well, with a female Director and Stage Manager along with Sound, Set, Costume and Makeup Designers. Three Sisters offers meaningful production roles to female emerging artists, including two Assistant Stage Managers from the Ottawa U Stage Management Programme. “In this show, the ASMs are really vital,” says Guy. “All the scene changes are seamless which means our ASMs are really additional characters in the show, in plain view of the audience and physically coordinating with the actors. The scene changes are like a dance; so our ASMs not only have all the organizational responsibilities that are “normal” for the job but also come right onto the stage while the action is ongoing. It’s a really demanding position and our two students are fantastic!” Anton in Show Business opens at The Gladstone Theatre, 910 Gladstone Avenue, on February 24 and runs evenings at 7:30 (Sunday & Monday nights dark) and 2:30 on Saturdays & Sundays, until Saturday March 5. Tickets are available from The Gladstone box office at www.thegladstone.ca or 613.233.4523. *************************************************************************************************************** |
