Saturday December 24th, 2022 with Heavy Ben
In Memoriam - 2022 (Part 1 of 3)

Part one in the annual Heavy Friends series that pays respects to the departed. Part two January 7 https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/410/58966.html Part three January 21 https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/410/59139.html Pictured: Margo Guryan, reminding us "don't you forget about me". We missed her passing in November 2021. Check out the excellent collection "29 Demos" (hardly "demos"... these are little baroque masterpieces) that reveals a world of remarkable music hitherto unheard.

Perhaps fittingly, this is Joe Messina's first appearance on a CKCU playsheet. Can you name a musician whose recordings have sold tens of millions of copies without credit? How about James Jamerson!? That was Motown, who stilfled the recognition of their musicians. Messina was the "white brother with soul", one of the most prolific guitarists in Motown Records' in-house studio band, the Funk Brothers.

Supercalafagalistickespeealadojus (The Super Song)
Alan Holmes and His New Tones [Gloria Parker sadly passed] - 10" - Columbia - 1949
The original "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" was written in 1949 by Gloria Parker (sometimes credited as Patricia Smith). Walt Disney corporation was sued for using the word for the famous song in Mary Poppins in 1964, and somehow won (i.e defended themselves in court), claiming that the word supercalafagalistickespeealadojus "existed in the oral tradition". With respect to Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, Disney can stick it. Something quite atrocious, indeed!
In The Middle

The obit for Sandy Nelson that I read included this: when asked later in life what he did with all the $$$ he made, he said "I spent most of it on whiskey and women, the rest I just wasted"

Ben Armstrong (host)
Thanks for the comment Bruce. I wondered who said that, as there are variations including similar quotes from Tug McGraw and George Best. Great career from Sandy Nelson, nonetheless.
