Greetings, Earthlings! Rob here, broadcasting live again on a chilly grey afternoon with an all-piano edition. Chat's open, so if you have anything you'd like to unload upon me, fire away!

Hoooooo boy; D. Dalle beat me to it with his ragey complaint! It's all your fault, David. The exposure to Lubomyr Melnyk set me on this path!

Piano will never catch on. Well, except maybe for that Dalle weirdo and just a few others. Same goes for Minimalism. Sitar. Throat singing, Afrobeat... All hard rock of the 70-'80s, all the time i say! Mullets Unite! ..... Oh there are commercial channels for that. That totally suck!! I cannot join live today for long. Peace all!

yeah, PeterB: piano's just a passing fad, I'm sure. No worries if you can't stick out the show, but make sure to come back on demand to catch the Erik Hall record. It's a doozy.

Those Dutch. You should look into pianist Jeroen van Veen. I have three box sets totally 28 cds the "Minimal Piano Collection" which includes Ten Holt's the Canto Ostinato, other Dutch composers, and tons of other composers ranging from Glass, Part, Rzewski, Eastman, La Monte Young, and a lot of other more obscure names.

I have an In C by van Veen that almost made it into today's playlist, DD. Maybe I'll do a part two later in the year. I'll have to check out more by him.

...but this Erik Hall version of Canto Ostinato is just knocking me out. I haven't spent much time listening to other recordings of it yet. Any that stick out to you?

John K
This is an awesome playlist, thank you Rob!

Reminds me of Steve Reich, so I'm looking up when this was recorded, and how. Like, single performer that overdubbed the three instruments (nice intro, Rob)? I doubt this piece used looping, am I right?

Hi John K, glad you're enjoying it! You're dead right on the facts: single performer, Erik Hall, overdubbing four parts on three keyboards: a 1962 Hammond M-101 organ, a 1978 Rhodes Mark I electric piano, and his family-heirloom 1910 Steinway grand piano.

...and yeah, very reminiscent of some of Steve Reich's work, and in fact, Hall's previous album is a take on Reich's Music for 18 Musicians that again had him playing all the parts on his own.

...oh, and the recording is brand new, but the piece, Canto Ostinato, is from the late 70s.

I highly recommend David's show, linked above. And thanks again, David, for turning me on to Lubomyr Melnyk's work, which we're hearing now. Just amazing stuff.

Cool show. Missed a chunk of it live so will tune in on-demand. I did not know Melnyk is Canadian.

Thanks for a great show, somehow perfectly in synch with the minutes of this Sunday afternoon. And c'mon -catching the genius of Lubomyr Melnick on CKCU twice in one month? Magic.

Manmohan, LM is maybe not so specifically Canadian: he was born in Ukraine, but his family moved to Winnipeg when he was young, and he went to university there. Good enough for a little maple leaf, I thought. Andrew, glad you enjoyed the show. Expect more Lubomyr on future editions. I'm planning on joining David Dalle as an active proponent of his work.
