Though, it is known as a harvest festival, Lohri is celebrated across India as it marks the passing of Winter solstice, which happens to be the shortest day and longest night of the year. Punjabi farmers regard Lohri as the financial new year. New agricultural tenancies commence on Lohri and rents are collected on this day. Punjabis regard the day of winter solstice as a new year which is celebrated on Maghi the next day. It is traditional to eat Gajak, Sarson da saag with Makki di roti, radish, ground nuts and jaggery. It is also traditional to eat "til rice" which is made by mixing jaggery, sesame seeds and rice. Pongal usually means festivity or celebration; more specifically Pongal is translated as "boiling over" or "overflow." Pongal is also the name of a sweetened dish of rice boiled with lentils that is ritually consumed on this day. Symbolically, pongal signifies the gradual heating of the earth as the Sun travels northward toward the equinox. This day coincides with Makara Sankranthi which is celebrated throughout India. 05-PONGALO PONGAL CD MISC-20240114 TRACK#05 2:32 MAHANADHI-1984; K S CHITRA; ILLYARAJA; VAALI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6u32X7r4WkE ब्राह्मणों में मकर संक्रांति के दिन तिल, चावल और दाल को दान करने का विशेष महत्व है। ब्राह्मण समाज की महिलाएं पूजा करते वक्त सुहाग की निशानियों को चढ़ाती हैं और फिर इन्हें 13 सुहागनों को बांटते हैं। महाराष्ट्रीयन परिवारों में सुहागन महिलाएं पुण्यकाल में स्नान कर तुलसी की आराधना और पूजा करती हैं। इस दिन मिट्टी से बना छोटा घड़ा, जिसे सुहाणा चा वाण कहते हैं। इसमें तिल के लड्डू, सुपारी, अनाज, खिचड़ी और दक्षिणा रखकर महिलाएं दान का संकल्प लेती हैं। कायस्थ समाज की महिलाएं संक्रांति की सुबह पानी में तिल डालकर स्नान करते हैं। साथ ही स्नान के बाद आग में तेल डालकर हाथ सेंकते हैं। संक्रांति के दिन सबेरे 5 बजे जागकर सभी स्नान करते हैं और गाय को डालते हैं। खाने में दाल-बाटी बनाई जाती है। मिठाई में जलेबी एवं तिल के लड्डू आदि बनाए जाते हैं। सबसे पहले ये व्यंजन भानजे को खिलाए जाते हैं। गुजराती रीति-रिवाज में संक्रांति मौज-मस्ती से भरपूर होती है। इस दिन पूरा परिवार घर की छत पर सामूहिक रूप से भोजन करता है। इस रिवाज के साथ ही पुरुष-महिलाएं पतंगें उड़ाते हैं। तिल-गुड के लड्डुओं के अंदर अंदर सिक्के रखकर दान करने का भी रिवाज है। सिंधी समाज में मकर संक्रांति को बेटियों का खास त्योहार कहा जाता है। संक्रांति पर सबसे अधिक कन्याओं एवं पंडितों को दान दिया जाता है। इस दिन पूर्वजों के नाम पर बेटियों को आटे के लड्डू, तिल के लड्डू, चिक्की और मेवा (स्यारो) दान स्वरूप दी जाती है। 06-CHALI CHALI RE DEKHO APNI PATANG CD MISC-20240114 TRACK#06 6:25 TAARAK MEHTA KA ULTA CHASHMAH-2016; VARIOUS ARTISTS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeTfpD28bYs The first day of the sun’s transit into the Makara (Capricorn) marks the occasion of Makar Sankranti, which is also known as Makara Sankranthi or Maghi.
