Jewel Of The Crown (Presenting the Late Great Dennis Emmanuel Brown)
February 1st, two thousand and twenty. Wow, so many things to note, mark and celebrate today and this month.
First though, I thank you for tuning into the show tonight and for the 16 years that we have been on air for you on CKCU. Yes... 16 years. What an amazing journey to get to here. Many ups and downs, moments I wish to forget and moments I cant but remember fondly. This month not only signifies the 16th Anniversary of Vintage Love but it also begins a month of many other celebrations. #1 as you know, we enter into Black History Month, #2, this is also Reggae Month and #3, this is the month of love with Valentines Day only a few short days away. So many things to look forward to and enjoy... as I hope you have been looking forward to Vintage Love tonight.
Tonight, we will be celebrating Black History Month, Reggae Month and the Sweet 16 of the Vintage Love show by featuring an artist who we play on VL allll the time, often as a regular part of the playlist and very often by your requests.
Aptly, given the title of, the "Crown Prince of Reggae", Dennis Emmanuel Browns birthday (or what would have been) is today, February 1st. Dennis Brown was born in 1957, on this day, in the Capital city of Jamaica, Kingston. I thought that celebrating him (DEB passed away in 1999) would be a great and fitting way to start off the month of February 2020 and all of these things that we have to celebrate and enjoy this month. So tonight's show will be featuring the music of Late Great Dennis Brown. Some of his classics, some of his less known recordings, some of the sweet cover versions he did and some of the tributes of other great Reggae artists singing his songs AND more... as much as we can fit in in our 2hrs tonight.
So without further adieu, we celebrate Dennis Brown.. his journey and his music.... the gift that he left for us to continue enjoying even though he has been gone for 20+yrs. Thank you Dennis for following your dreams and passions from such an early age and providing us with incredibly great songs that play on in the soundtrack of our lives. 75 albums and more. Thank you to those who helped to bring you to us... my label, VP Records (of course Miles Ahead in Reggae Music), Studio One, Greensleeves, King Jammys, Trojan, Joe Gibbs, A&M, Ras Records, Yvonne's Special, Heartbeat Records and so many more. Without you, so many Dennis Brown songs may not have gone to the world. Also, nuff respect to VP Records for the tribute albums that have been released in honor of Dennis Brown. Records such as, "We Remember" released in 2016, Dean Frasers, "Melodies of D.E.B." released in 2017 and "King Jammy Presents: Dennis Brown - Tracks of Life", released in 2018 to rave reviews. (I was lucky to get my hands on this album... big thanks to Amy at VP Records in Jamaica, New York) You can get your hands on these and many other great Reggae artists albums by visiting: https://www.vpreggae.com/brands/VP-RECORDS.html?sort=newest
Tonight we feature songs from these albums as well as original Dennis tunes to note his birthday and to remember the gifts that he left for us to continue to enjoy. An amazing 75 albums, 2 Grammy nominations and the endless respect, love and admiration for this man who Bob Marley himself, claimed as his favorite singer. So here we go.. I hope you enjoy the music tonight or On Demand if you are checking out the show after its original live airing date, Feb. 1st, 2020.
Thank you for tuning into Vintage Love tonight and for spending 16yrs with us as we also celebrate this amazing Sweet Sixteen Anniversary of the shows meager beginnings back in Feb. 2004. So much music and life we have enjoyed together.. I hope for another 16, Jah willing.
Rest in Paradise Dennis Emmanuel Brown... and thank you.
Have yourselves a good night and a better tomorrow.
Happy 16th everyone. Without you, there would be no VL or CKCU. So again and again and again... 谢谢! Gracias! Merci Beaucoup! Grazie! Xie Xie! Arigato! Mahalo! Asante! ありがとう! Thank you!!!!
Peace and Love to one and all.
:-)
