Canadian Spaces
Saturday March 14th, 2020 with Chris White
A tribute to the late Laura Smith with Erin Donovan (Mahone Bay), Paul Mills (London), Marianne Grittani (Saltspring Island) and Tannis Slimmon (Guelph). Emerging singer-songwriters Miriam Dawn and Jordan King drop by to chat and perform.
We pay tribute to two people we dearly miss: Chopper McKinnon, who passed away seven years ago on March 13, 2013; and Laura Smith, who passed away just one week ago on March 7, 2020.
Chopper McKinnon created Canadian Spaces on CKCU FM in 1980 and proceeded to introduce countless listeners to a stellar array of Canadian singer-songwriters and their music for the next 33 years. Now, 7 years after Chopper's passing, the 'Space Cadets' remain loyal and the show is going strong as Canada's longest-running folk music program!
Laura Smith's passing is a huge loss, but she has left us with a treasure trove of gorgeous and timeless songs, recordings and performances. She left this world "on a cloud of love" and maintained a sense of humour and an 'attitude of gratitude' to the end. Chris plays some of her music and talks with some of her dearest friends.
Later in the show, Miriam Dawn and Jordan King drop by to chat and perform. They are two of five young singer-songwriters who will be participating in a concert called "New Voices, New Songs" to be presented by the Spirit of Rasputin's group -- see https://www.rasputins.org for information.
