Friday Drive
Friday March 21st, 2025 with Trevor Walker
[DiscoLabEarlySpringThingWarmUp]

Happy Friday “Drivers” fam! Back with a bunch on funky disco boogie funk jazz fusion, soul and some “Disco not Disco” grooves to spice up your Friday evening on today’s episode. A bunch of nice selections surfaced while digging in the crates for tomorrow’s “Nearly Spring” March edition of the DiscoLab event. In the first hour I’ll be rolling out some of the more “Hustle” oriented disco “slow burners” to unwind you from the past week while building things up to a proper “Disco Inferno” in hour two to wind you all up for whatever you may have planned for your weekend. Happy listening, thank you all for taking the time and hope you enjoy this week’s offering.

Event:
https://www.facebook.com/share/15LzqFSkBC/

Capital Sessions is back at the NAC with DJ Xannie and Dancer Zomi! It's a free community house dance practice! The DJ plays deep soulful house for 2 hours straight and there are two 30-minute workshops (at 1:30 and 2:30) by our guest dancer. The instruction is visual (no screaming 1-2-3-4) and the class portion is optional, you can do you, or learn some steps! You can hang out, there's seating, an awesome cafe, great family-friendly house music and an awesome community vibe. Come share-vibe and enjoy the music! Did I mention it's FREE???
DJ Xannie
Xannie, born Anne-Sybil Yacé in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, is a Canadian DJ and musician whose unique sound blends Afrobeat, hip-hop, electronic, and world music. Raised in a family of musicians, Xannie’s love for music began early. Her dynamic live performances, fueled by her passion for transcending cultural barriers, have earned her a devoted following. As a resident DJ and community manager for the Quata Quata collective, she continues to influence the Outaouais music scene, shaping a sound uniquely her own. Apassionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in the music industry, she demonstrates how music can unite people and transcend borders.
Dancer Zomi
Zomi (she/her) is a versatile artist who first nurtured her passion for dance, choreography, and teaching at House of Eights Dance Studio in Halifax for several years. Since deciding to pursue movement, she has performed and choreographed for numerous events, showcases, music videos, and performance videos. Some notable performances include Atlantic Fashion Week, Nocturne Halifax, Mayworks Kjipuktuk/Halifax, “Dancing Soles” (in collaboration with Little Burgundy, Reebok, and Kim Gingras), Culture Shock International Choreographers’ Showcase in Ottawa, and Thesis Dance Event in Tampa, Florida. Zomi values musicality, authenticity, and exploration. She has enjoyed developing her individual style and understanding within Hip Hop, Contemporary, Commercial Dance, Freestyle, and Choreography.
Currently based in Ottawa, Ontario, Zomi invests her learning in the Street Dance community and its many forms, focusing on Hip Hop Freestyle. In 2022, she joined PNL Dance Co., one of Ottawa’s leading dance teams. In 2024, she became the team's Co-Director alongside Valentina Solis, joined the faculty at the Flava Factory, Ottawa's only Street Dance studio, and has provided Hip Hop education through Moov Ottawa Dance. Through immersion in Ottawa’s dance scene, Zomi has had the opportunity to battle, teach, and showcase. She is a humble guest in many Street Dance forms pioneered by Black and Brown communities, heeding culture as part of one’s dance foundation while teaching all ages. As a lifelong learner with a drive for knowledge, she hopes her passion inspires others in any space she steps into.

Acclaimed Nicaraguan-Canadian composer, producer, and musician Brandon Miguel Valdivia, also known as Mas Aya, returns to Ottawa for a night of lush atmospheric production and live instrumentation. Following the release of his 2024 LP, Coming and Going, it's evident that Mas Aya's percussion-driven sound has grown even more playful and expansive thanks in part to his closest collaborators: his partner, Lido Pimienta, and his young daughter, who both appear as vocalists on the album. This intimate intermingling of familial vocals, ambient echoes, and Valdivia's signature combination of live drums and flutes creates what critics have called a "quiet, almost restful quality," but Mas Aya's latest work still teems with subtle contradictions and restless intrigue, all the while carving pathways toward the reconciliation of these opposing sonic and thematic forces.
Mas Aya is joined by avant-garde improvisational artist Aymara Alvarado Sánchez and eclectic vinyl selector DJ Glory Hull at Club SAW on March 29.

VIBECHECK feat. Dystoh, The Brothership, + Mo The Pro
DYSTOH
Dystoh is a dynamic new duo from Ray Tabana and Phil Motion, founding members of the three-time Juno-nominated Souljazz Orchestra. Having debuted live at the Dakar Music Expo in Senegal (2023) and since toured Colombia, Canada, and Europe, the duo blends hard-hitting congas, roaring baritone sax, and tight two-part harmonies, while their sound draws from the more commanding elements of Afrobeat(s), Latin and Reggae influences.
Their self-produced debut album, ‘Heat of the Times’ (May 2024), is a journey through the realities, anxieties and hopes in the chaos of our modern world. Standout tracks like ‘All My Life’ and ‘Days Go By’ highlight the best of their hypnotic grooves and polyrhythmic arrangements as they bring forth a new high-energy signature sound that speaks to the duo’s rich history as seasoned performers and to their unwavering dedication to live music.

THE BROTHERSHIP
The Brothership is a gritty Afro futuristic funk collective harmoniously spawned from Ottawa based rock and soul band The Lionyls. Drawing inspiration from iconic funk acts such as Parliament/Funkadelic, The Meters, War, The Ohio Players, and contemporaries like Ghostnote and Dumpstaphunk, they’re firmly planted in the growing global funk renaissance. Blending deep instrumental grooves with simply irresistible vocal harmonies and tongue-in-cheek humour, The Brothership’s high energy party vibe offers an immersive musical experience for all to enjoy!

MO THE PRO
Mo, The Pro is a DJ with an ear for rhythm and a heart for culture. He is a Canada-based Nigerian passionate about Afrobeats, Amapiano, Rap, and Pop. Deeply inspired by the vibrant rhythms of Afrobeats, he seamlessly weaves these infectious beats into his sets, crafting unforgettable musical experiences. Mo, The Pro is not just a DJ but a musical storyteller, bringing the spirit of Nigeria to Canada and beyond.

LAROSE & FABRE

Hailing from Québec, Canada, Larose & Fabre are a DJ and producer duo who have made their mark on the electronic music scene with their explosive energy and unique sound.
Charley Fabre: Born in Paris, France, Charley began as a Hip-Hop and Reggae DJ before diving into the world of House and Techno in 2006. He established himself in the underground scenes of Toronto and Hamilton, performing at iconic venues like Comfort Zone and The Guvernment. His bouncy Techno-House style earned him a nomination at the World Electronic Music Festival (WEMF) and collaborations with renowned artists such as Flim, Sydney Blu, and Lady Bass.
Sébastien Larose: Originally from Alberta, Sébastien cut his teeth in Québec’s club scene, becoming a resident DJ at Le Drague, L’Éclipse, and Kaméléon. Neil & Drake I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the selections. I did not attend the Disco night at Bluesfest, though I'm sure it was fun. Kinda try to avoid BF to be honest.... Kind of turned off the festival thing in general, mind you I do enjoy the Jazz Festival. Thanks for taking the time and for your comments!

Very much like what you have been doing... For me, in 1995, NSC was a game changer. I was able to get into music again... Couldn't thank you enough...

robert p in gatineau the poem "Jack's House" really speaks to what you're suggesting. Truly the evolution of Disco. I'm going to look into that book you speak of, sounds like a great read.. That Brainstorm track is pure heat! Thanks as always for taking the time and your comments. cheers!
