Acclaimed Nicaraguan-Canadian composer, producer, and musician Brandon Miguel Valdivia, also known as Mas Aya, returns to Ottawa for a night of lush atmospheric production and live instrumentation. Following the release of his 2024 LP, Coming and Going, it's evident that Mas Aya's percussion-driven sound has grown even more playful and expansive thanks in part to his closest collaborators: his partner, Lido Pimienta, and his young daughter, who both appear as vocalists on the album. This intimate intermingling of familial vocals, ambient echoes, and Valdivia's signature combination of live drums and flutes creates what critics have called a "quiet, almost restful quality," but Mas Aya's latest work still teems with subtle contradictions and restless intrigue, all the while carving pathways toward the reconciliation of these opposing sonic and thematic forces.
Mas Aya is joined by avant-garde improvisational artist Aymara Alvarado Sánchez and eclectic vinyl selector DJ Glory Hull at Club SAW on March 29.

Satoko Fujii’s Tokyo Trio is a lithe, quick-witted ensemble capable of terrific speed and excitement as well as subtle textures and tone colors. The extraordinary rapport between Fujii and fellow Japanese artists Natto Maki on bass and Oden on drums gives the trio a distinctive group sound full of “grace, sophistication, surprise and ingenuity”. With a deep knowledge and love of the jazz tradition as its foundation, Tokyo Trio ventures into bold, new and thrilling sonic territory.

LSD Trio is Linsey Wellman on baritone saxophone, pedals; Scott Warren, tape loops, electronics, percussion; and David Jackson on guitar, modular synth, laptop.
The band is based in experimenting and improvising with live performance as its primary output often using samples and field recordings made from their environment. The instrumental configuration for shows is always changing and most always improvised. Primarily though this involves instruments being highly processed in real time with pedals, software, and tape, often resulting in large looped noisy ambiences that shift into funky jaggy instrumental rock.

VIBECHECK feat. Dystoh, The Brothership, + Mo The Pro
DYSTOH
Dystoh is a dynamic new duo from Ray Tabana and Phil Motion, founding members of the three-time Juno-nominated Souljazz Orchestra. Having debuted live at the Dakar Music Expo in Senegal (2023) and since toured Colombia, Canada, and Europe, the duo blends hard-hitting congas, roaring baritone sax, and tight two-part harmonies, while their sound draws from the more commanding elements of Afrobeat(s), Latin and Reggae influences.
Their self-produced debut album, ‘Heat of the Times’ (May 2024), is a journey through the realities, anxieties and hopes in the chaos of our modern world. Standout tracks like ‘All My Life’ and ‘Days Go By’ highlight the best of their hypnotic grooves and polyrhythmic arrangements as they bring forth a new high-energy signature sound that speaks to the duo’s rich history as seasoned performers and to their unwavering dedication to live music.

THE BROTHERSHIP
The Brothership is a gritty Afro futuristic funk collective harmoniously spawned from Ottawa based rock and soul band The Lionyls. Drawing inspiration from iconic funk acts such as Parliament/Funkadelic, The Meters, War, The Ohio Players, and contemporaries like Ghostnote and Dumpstaphunk, they’re firmly planted in the growing global funk renaissance. Blending deep instrumental grooves with simply irresistible vocal harmonies and tongue-in-cheek humour, The Brothership’s high energy party vibe offers an immersive musical experience for all to enjoy!

MO THE PRO
Mo, The Pro is a DJ with an ear for rhythm and a heart for culture. He is a Canada-based Nigerian passionate about Afrobeats, Amapiano, Rap, and Pop. Deeply inspired by the vibrant rhythms of Afrobeats, he seamlessly weaves these infectious beats into his sets, crafting unforgettable musical experiences. Mo, The Pro is not just a DJ but a musical storyteller, bringing the spirit of Nigeria to Canada and beyond.

Rommel, a winner of several awards, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, musician, and producer who stands out for his talent and versatility. Blending elements of Brazilian popular music with afro-beat, reggae, funk, and jazz, Rommel breathes and sweats authentic and dynamic music with compositions in Portuguese, French, Spanish, and English.
His latest album is titled KARAWARA. "Karawara" is a polysemous word of Tupi-Guarani origin (from the family of languages of the lowlands of South America) which, among other meanings, refers to "the spirits of the forest." In this sense, Karawara pays tribute to the indigenous peoples of the world and their history of struggle for fundamental human rights and recognition. Karawara also addresses themes of ancestry, spirituality, and environmental and social issues, using music as a means to spread a message of peace, hope, humanity, and compassion.

His bouncy Techno-House style earned him a nomination at the World Electronic Music Festival (WEMF) and collaborations with renowned artists such as Flim, Sydney Blu, and Lady Bass.

This year, the event promises to captivate audiences on a national stage. Since 2020, the CMAs have brought together artists, music entrepreneurs, businesses, and fans, showcasing creativity, excellence, and innovation in the music industry across 13 award categories.

Nominees will be announced on Friday, January 17th from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM at a free in-person event at the National Arts Centre’s Peter A Hendorrf Place featuring live music by DJ Memetic and opportunities to connect with nominees and fellow music-lovers. Media are encouraged to attend, all are welcome.

Once again, fans will have a chance to make their voice heard with public voting for the 5 categories opening on January 17th, 2025 at 12:00 PM ET until February 14th, 2025 at 5:00 PM ET. Votes can be cast by visiting ottawamic.com/cma. Only 1 vote per email address will be accepted.

Celebrating 10 years as Ottawa’s non-profit music organization this year, OMIC will facilitate events during the inaugural Capital Music Week (CxMW) from May 20-25, 2025, a week-long celebration of showcases, professional development, networking, and business-to-business opportunities. Hi. Had to squeeze in my guitar practice during the show. When my neighbors are absent. Not soundproof ! I have to practice every day, acoustic fingerstyle country blues little ditties. So i don't forget. Heard the end of the program. Orlando Julius sounded good. I bought a comp on CD today. Will listen on-demand tomorrow, probably. There is a new Live War recording available, 1974, Japan...

OK. Second try today for listening on-demand. Awesome show. Was listening with headphones to understand the lyrics on the Alive ! track. Smooth mix in the first hour. That War track is a serious thing. Groovin' along in the second hour. Much better with headphones on. Thank you.
