Today being “International Women’s Day” I’m going to feature some of my favourite female artists on this week’s show to pay tribute to the most valuable and important gender to humanity.
The plan is to feature women’s performances from some of many the musical genres featured on the “Friday Drive” as possible, knowing full well that I’ll only be scratching the surface of women’s contributions to recorded music’s legacy.
Much love and respect to all my sisters out there and hope you all enjoy the show!
On this Friday I’ll be featuring some promos and selections from my much neglected digital music library. Vinyl is my favourite format but so much music comes out and is available digitally it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming.
You can expect the usual more mellow vibes in the “unwinding from the work week” first hour and I’ll be taking the tempo up to wind you all up for the weekend in the second hour.
Being the last week of February, on this week’s show I’ll be featuring music by black recording artists that lament, comment on and uplift the black experience as a little nod to February, ironically the shortest and coldest month of the year dedicated to Black History.

The plan is to keep the commentary short and let the music speak for itself.

I’ll be digging into some recent and classic favourites, some of which will be familiar to some listeners to this program and I hope you all gain a little something from this week’s episode.

Feeling like I’ve got more music than time so you can expect a little overtime for any who tend to check the show out “on demand”.
This week I’ll be focusing the majority of the show to two great vocalists who just left us only this January.
Marlena Shaw passed January 19th and Micheal Watford on January 26th.
Both who have been staples throughout the years for me and my obsession with music.
I’ll keep my descriptions brief so as to focus on the music and direct you to the show’s interactive page where I’ll provide a few links.
Marlena Shaw was a stellar Jazz, Blues, Soul and Disco singe who’s career spanned from the 1960’s and performed right up until her passing this year, she was into her 80’s.
Aiming to fill the first “Unwind” hour with some favourites from Marlena Shaw, with the very limited discography I possess, focused mostly on juggling between her first two albums, of which I believe “The Spice Of Life” should be considered essential.
Glad to have you all here for the kick off show of 2024.

We lost another great just before the closing of last year, last Friday to be precise, with the passing of Leslie Coleman McCann aka Les McCann.

Starting the show off with a little tribute to the man with some samplings from the limited discography in my collection and will be moving rather abruptly into a more electronic influenced show and a warm up for some action happening this weekend which I’ll outline further at the top of the second hour of the show.

I also wanted make a quick mention and send a massive shout to everyone who listens to the show on demand.
I know I should probably be doing a recap of my favourite releases of 2023 on this final episode of the year but the time gods worked their magic to prevent me from getting the music sorted out, sadly.

No promises that I’ll be able to do a proper favs of the year but I’ll be setting aside some releases and hopefully pull something together sometime in January.

'Tis the season where we wish for peace on earth and goodwill to all and with the current state of global affairs, I figured it would be perfect timing to do a show where the music reflects some positive vibes, contemplating, commenting and some perhaps some lamenting focused on peace and goodwill to ourselves and each other.

A substantial offering of spiritual Jazz, Funk and soul with a taste of gospel will be on the decks during this episode which will, mostly, hopefully, project some positivity.

Full disclosure, I lost my composure a few times while pulling music for tonights show and hope that we’ll be all moved to spread a little more love to each other, from what I can tell we could all definitely be more compassionate and caring to each other and to ourselves.

There was so much music that there will most definitely be some bonus content on demand for anyone who streams the show beyond the original FM broadcast.

Although I like to mostly play fresh tunes, I dug into the crates and pulled quite a few recognizable tunes from past episodes that long time listeners will remember from over the years.

A lot of the selections are personal favourites that I tend to drop with any little excuse.

Another quick note that this episode was put together before the news of the legendary Amp Fiddler ’s passing, RIP, truly wished I had done a proper tribute, which may still be in the works, just a mention that “Love & War” is included as part of the selections, sadly with no mention of our collective loss.

I want to start the show with what I consider a masterpiece by the late great Pharaoh Sanders from the album “Love In Us All” entitled “Love Is Everywhere” in it’s entirety and send a big shout out to Wyatt for hooking this one up.`
Buț first a short mantra from Emma-Jean Thackray from her album “Yellow” and the cut “ May There Be Peace”.
As always, thank you so much for taking the time to be here, happy listening and I hope you enjoy the show.
