Happy Friday Drivers family and welcome to this week’s show!
A week later than I would’ve liked as I’ve been playing catch up with all the greats we’ve been losing in quick succession lately, but better late than never.
This week’s focus will be a focus on Howard Beverly, stage name Frankie Beverly who left us on September 10th, 2024 at 77 years young.
From Discogs:
“At age nine, he saw Frankie Lymon who had a profound influence on him and consequently he became known as "Little Frankie".
His first band as leader was The Blenders, a short-lived a cappella doo-wop group. In 1963, he founded The Butlers and recorded for various labels, including: Guyden Records, Fairmount Records and Gamble. In 1970, Frankie started a new band called Raw Soul. They got their big break when Janis Hunter saw the band and told her fiancé Marvin Gaye about them. Marvin was impressed and they opened for him on his I Want You tour. He persuaded them to change their name and they became Maze.
Maze signed to Capitol Records in 1977.”
I will be focusing on the “Maze” years from the 1977 to 1983 with selections from four albums and perhaps some few singles to fill gaps.
Namely: “Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly”, “Golden Time Of Day”, “Inspiration” and “Live In New Orleans”.
Hour one will be a true unwind with some sweet soul vibes while I will juggle between the studio albums and in hour two let’s have a taste of the live magic that was Maze & Frankie Beverly by featuring the “Live In New Orleans” album, hopefully, in it’s entirety time permitting.
Thanks for being here and hope you all enjoy this week’s playlist selections!

A highly technical mixer, Rick includes flashes of myriad genres when playing house music sets, ranging from techno to disco, breaks to jazz, and from latin to lounge. He hasn't forgotten his musical roots from running the Detroit-Toronto corridor for years, you can always expect the unexpected while Rick blends several different auditory flavours into his Dj sets.
