Happy Friday Drivers family and welcome to this week’s show!
This week we’ll be celebrating the musical gifts left us by the late great Sérgio Mendes who only just left us last Thursday on September 5.
Sadly, I didn’t have time to pull together a proper mixtape last week but I believe we’ll be filling the next couple of hours with some stellar groovy Bossa Nova and a little funk and soul.
Sérgio Mendes is one of my first introductions to Brazilian music in my early days of collecting and I will always grab a Sergio Mendes album I don’t own and have yet to be disappointed.
I’ll be running through some of my favourite from his vast discography sampling from my limited library spanning the early 1960’s to the late 1970’s.
Sérgio Santos Mendes (born February 11, 1941 in Niteròi Rio de Janeiro–died September 5, 2024 in Los Angeles) was a Brazilian pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader. He has over 55 releases, and played bossa nova heavily crossed with jazz and funk. Mendes was a unique example of a Brazilian musician primarily known in the United States, where his albums were recorded and where most of his touring took place. He died while dealing with the effects of long COVID-19.
