Friday Drive
Friday February 23rd, 2024 with Trevor Walker
[BlackHistoryMonthNod]

Happy Friday Drivers! Being the last week of February, on this week’s show I’ll be featuring music by black recording artists that lament, comment on and uplift the black experience as a little nod to February, ironically the shortest and coldest month of the year dedicated to Black History. The plan is to keep the commentary short and let the music speak for itself. I’ll be digging into some recent and classic favourites, some of which will be familiar to some listeners to this program and I hope you all gain a little something from this week’s episode. Feeling like I’ve got more music than time so you can expect a little overtime for any who tend to check the show out “on demand”. Thank you for your time, wishing you an enlightened listen and hope you dig this week’s selections.

SESSION GROUND RULES
We want to make sure that all of our artists and models are comfortable, respected, and able to work effectively! Here are some ground rules for our Life Drawing sessions to help make that happen.
1. Please keep all electronics off or silenced during the session.
2. Please only enter/exit the session in the breaks between poses.
3. Keep your voices down and conversations to a minimum while the model is posing. We love when local artists connect, but please wait for the halfway break or step outside to do so!
4. Artists own the work they produce during the session, and may share and distribute it how they wish. Models will never be identified by their full names.
5. Under no circumstances is the model to be touched or photographed by artists.
6. Comments, concerns, or feedback about any part of the session should be discussed directly with the facilitator.
If you have any questions or input for our ground rules, send us a message!

Her lyrics have been described as "escrevivência,” a term Conceição Evaristo uses to “tell our stories from our perspectives.” It represents the subjectivity of a Black woman in Brazilian society.

Moov is back in the city for a quick second to bring on a dope workshop by another Canadian respected artist - Kevin "Fines Birung” from Toronto! And, we’ll be bringing him out to judge a mini battle as well!
ABOUT: Born in Metro Manila, Philippines and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, Kevin is an individual who pairs his natural dance talent with artistic development and has become one of the best to represent Hip Hop dancers in Toronto within his current generation.
Having begun his training during his early teens, Kevin went on to teach at various studios and co-founded a dance conglomerate for younger dancers by the name of IGIWA. He was soon after discovered by Dreamwalker Dance Company and was selected to be a part of the Soulpepper Theatre/Young Centre of Performing Arts Emerging Artist Program as a mentee. After receiving scholarships and notable recognition from the likes of Movement Lifestyle, Young Lions Dance Company, he went on to continue his studies at OCADU University for Sculpture & Installation while joining choreography based team C2 Genesys to compete and claim local and international titles.
Following his time contributing and participating in Toronto’s choreography circuit, Kevin honed in his focus on Hip Hop as street style dance. Pursuing dance in the form of individual practice, he gained notability and numerous titles in Canadian competitions and events such as; Fired Up Still, Millennium Funk’n Battle, Parks N’ Wreck, Da Reunion, Kiff Your Style, KOD, Red Bull Dance Your Style, Under Pressure and House of Paint.
Today, Kevin aims to share his practice of embodying a combination of his mental and physical understanding of the body and its application through culture of Hip Hop, while playing his part in cultivating and preserving the rich history of Canadian street style dance.

Moov is back in the city for a quick second to bring on a dope workshop by another Canadian respected artist - "Tash" from Montreal! And, we’ll be bringing her out to judge a mini battle as well!
ABOUT TASH: Natasha "Tash" Jean-Bart was born in 1971 in Montreal, Canada. She is an accomplished professional dancer, teacher and choreographer. Various companies, organizations, corporate events, theaters, competitions, and artists in development actively seek her out for her fundamental yet progressive approach to teaching, consulting, coaching, and mentoring. Her professional career spans over thirty-eight years in the performing arts, renowned for her Hip Hop dance mastery; her specialities range from a deep understanding of original street dance styles to their application within the various theatrical, battle, and commercial stages.
Natasha Jean-Bart grew up alongside Hip Hop culture. She began her pilgrimage between Montreal and Los Angeles to learn myriads of street dance fundamentals, foundations and techniques in the late '90s. She was trained thoroughly by the creators and original pioneers of our street dance culture. Her teachers are non-others than the late Don "Campbellock" Campbell (Creator of the Campbellocking aka Locking Art-form, founder of The Lockers group), the late Greg "Campbellock Jr Pope (The Lockers,) Jimmy Scoo B Doo Foster (Soul Train dancer,) Damita Jo Freeman (Queen of Soul Train,) Timothy "Popin Pete" Solomon, Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quinones (The Lockers,) the late Stephen "Skeeter Rabbit" Nichols (Electric Boogaloos) and many more.
Tash is an international elite competitive judge. She held the Canadian Judge position for Hip Hop International (HHI) in 2004 and was promoted in 2005 to Head Judge duties (2005-2010.) In 2017, she was the selected Locking Judge for Juste Debout International Tour 2018 with a 15-country agenda. Since then, she has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, Asia, South America, and the United States to spread knowledge and share her love of street dance art forms.
In 2005, she landed a three-year contract for the original "Lady Madonna" lead role in "The Beatles LOVE" created by Cirque du Soleil at MGM Mirage in Las Vegas. She was also hired as a 'Street Dance Generalist' coach for the creation/workshop portion held at Montreal's CDS headquarters. She transitioned into an on-call Locking instructor for Cirque Du Soleil's Vegas resident shows for the last ten years. Her mandate is to maintain the 'Locking" art form at a high-performance level, which is imperative for the show's integrity both artistically and technically. In 2006, she was invited as a faculty teacher for the Elite Locking Camp hosted/produced by Greg "Campbellock Jr" Pope and organized by Frank Sams. The camp, held yearly in Las Vegas, was entrusted to her in 2014, who now runs it with her husband, Ghislain Malardier, through their Wättssoul Inc company. They rebranded the ELC camp to LAS VEGAS LOCKING CAMP (LVLC).
Recently she served as a Rehearsal Director for Montreal's Ebnflōh Dance company under the artistic direction of Alexandra "Spicey" Landé. Tash is also a member of Bboyizm Dance company under the artistic direction of Yvon "Bboy Crazy Smooth) Soglo, co-produced with CCOV with the "In My Body" piece touring all across Canada and internationally from 2022 to 2024.
Natasha Jean-Bart, aka "Tash", is the Co-Founder, CEO-Creative Director of Wättssoul Inc, a U.S.-based company dedicated to nurturing and empowering creativity, arts, and cultural awareness. She is often called a bridge and continues to accompany dancers throughout their careers. She is a writer who contributes to Theatre Art Life's Entertainment platform: Global Media Site, UK Hip Hop Dance Almanac “Ink Cypher” and other online publication platforms. She is the creator of TashFormula© — a Street Dance Platform designed to help and guide both teachers and students by providing history, tools, context and simple formulas to achieve mastery of the vast street dance landscape. She also serves as Artistic Consultant/Advisor in Hip Hop and gives workshops and lectures internationally.

Pique is back with the spring edition opener of its 2024 season bringing groundbreaking international and Canadian artists to the Arts Court in downtown Ottawa. For the first time, Pique will present a multi-day edition of its acclaimed music and art festival series happening on March 8–10, 2024. Transforming the Arts Court into a dynamic venue-wide celebration, Pique is a seasonal showcase of underground and avant-garde performance, visual art, and more.
The 2024 Pique spring edition is all about experimentation, exploration and expecting the unexpected. Many of the artists featured at the spring edition are innovators in their own right, bending genres, trailblazing new technologies, or delving deeper into unexplored capabilities. While this edition invites audience members to challenge themselves and listen deeply, there are still plenty of opportunities for silliness and celebration. Charting a course that explores both mind and body, thinking and acting, Pique spring edition offers a full range of creative possibilities.
The all-ages festival will present more than 15 artists across 7 stages and exhibition spaces, including groundbreaking audio/visual performances, DJ sets, performance art, exhibitions, and more. Tickets to Pique are pay-what-you-can, and the Pique live stream is free to watch online.
Admission is SLIDING SCALE with a suggested contribution of $25-$50.
To purchase a ticket below or above the suggested sliding scale, please register for our pay-what-you-can ticket program: https://forms.gle/gTH1PMui7vxF5VMu7
PLEASE NOTE that while a tickets gains you access to the festival, each individual venue space within is subject to capacity, and your ticket does not guarantee you access to each performance. Consult the schedule and arrive early to the stage to ensure you catch the performance(s) you want to see!
Registration to the Topique forum is free with a ticket to Pique, but each session is subject to limited capacity restrictions. Registration opening soon!
The event is ALL AGES and licensed.

The 44th Ottawa Jazz Festival is a little more than 4 months away. To lighten our hearts and souls after the long, dark, cold months, the Festival is delighted to present the fabled Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a Benefit Concert & Social on April 3, 2024, 6:30pm at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (355 Cooper St. on the corner of Cooper and O’Connor Streets).
For 60 years, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album introduced the iconic group to the world. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their [Ladysmith Black Mambazo] singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” – Paul Simon

Founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, the three elements of the group’s name comes from the founder’s hometown of Ladysmith, the black ox (considered to be the strongest farm animal), and mambazo, which means axe in Zulu (symbolic of the choir's ability to "chop down" the competition) – Wikipedia. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honour.
“Undulating rhythmic phrases that push and pull … harmonizing that is both ethereal and earthy.” – World Music, UK
Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people, singing a message of peace, love and harmony. With their 2024 release, Soothe My Soul…Songs From Our South African Church, the group puts their own spin on gospel music.
The Social includes complimentary canapés, a cash bar and mystery martinis with exciting gift items! Mystery Martini packages may contain anything from restaurant vouchers, gift baskets, trips, spa & salon outings, merchandise, adventure packages and so much more. You just never know, it’s a special mystery – just for you!
Doors open & Social at 6:30pm
Benefit Concert at 8pm

Multidisciplinarity is an integral part of Annie-Claude Deschênes’ creative process, who continues her perpetual personal quest of uniting music and performance art by bending the pre-established conventions of stage presence. A key figure on the Montreal independent music scene for almost twenty years, she made her mark as a singer, musician, songwriter, performer and visual artist with Duchess Says and PyPy, two bands that are renowned as much for their electrifying performances as for their artistic sensibility. Her exploratory approach to staging and sound design takes a new direction with the genesis of this solo project: the urgency that characterizes her work remains, but frustration and aggression give way to introspection and vulnerability. Annie-Claude Deschênes explores and reinvents herself under her own name, driven by a constant need to create outside her comfort zone. Inspired by minimal pop and the pioneers of electronic music, Les manières de table, her first solo album due out in spring 2024, is as danceable and melodic as it is disquieting and
dystopian, proposing to set the table differently by deconstructing the social codes of politeness imposed on us.

Mary Ancheta Quartet is based out of Vancouver, BC. Keyboardist Mary Ancheta is a Canadian / Filipina artist who steps into the spotlight with her genre-bending, organic, modern take on jazz and electro-funk. Inspired by the likes of Squarepusher, The Meters, John Scofield, and Prince, Ancheta knows what’s up when it comes to arresting melodies and irresistible grooves with Trent Otter on drums, Dominic Conway on sax, and Matt Reid on bass.
Encompassing her experience in film scoring, Ancheta seeks to tap into raw-fuelled moments favouring grittiness over perfection. Last summer, they played on the Mainstage to Jazz Festival audiences all across Canada alongside Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Sun Ra Arkestra, Domi & JD Beck, Melody Gardot, and more.

Wow ! Thanks. I had never heard this version of Strange Fruit. Awesome. Great selection. Billie Holiday was told by the authorities to stop singing this song in the 40s. As a result, she was hounded by the drug czar... Died at a young age, i believe. Under arrest (?)... in the hospital...

I am pretty sure that Lady Day sang the song Strange Fruit at every performance...

robert p you are correct from what I've heard such a sad story but I do love Nina's rendition as well. Thank you so much for the comments and taking the time. Hava a great weekend!
