Happy Friday Drivers!
Had the good fortune to have my old friend Jefferson take me around some of his favourite spots to dig for music in Toronto last weekend which was quite fruitful.
Today’s show will be the first of many where I’ll be digging into some of the goodies unearthed as well as some of the music that has been overlooked but needs to be heard with a few nods to Black History Month.
Some amazing finds and long time wants to share with you all today and in the coming weeks.
Expect a wide variety of the usual Friday Drive fare!
Thank you for taking the time, happy listening and I hope you enjoy this week’s offering.

Check out our spin on happy hour = #HoppyHour! Every Saturday from 9pm to 10pm we offer $4 beer & bar rail, featured cocktails, and featured DJs! Saturday February 17th, we're proud to host the return to White Rabbit, one of Canada's top dance music ambassadors, and an exceptional DJ & Producer: SYDNEY BLU (Truesoul / Knee Deep in Sound / Circus Recordings / Katerblau / Desert Hearts) Sydney Blu’s career can be considered a journey of evolvement. With a tremendous passion for live performance, music production, and all-around artistic creativity, Sydney’s constant determination shines brightly through her accomplished DJ career. With beginnings in Toronto, Canada playing for The Guvernment Nightclub, Footwork Nightclub, and the LGBTQ2S+ community, then following 6 years in the United States touring the continent and the globe, all the way to her recent life in Berlin, Germany, Sydney’s dedication to living her life through music is unbridled. A proudly Canadian artist, Sydney’s success is largely attributed to her relentless touring schedule which she’s upheld for several years. In 2009, Sydney Blu founded her imprint, Blu Music, on the principle of authentic, dancefloor-rich house and techno. The following year she extended her brand to another branch introducing her legendary Blu Party series, which curates some of the greatest names of the underground house. On top of that, Sydney has released music on some of the most recognized labels in the industry including Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound, Adam Beyers & Drumcode’s Truesoul, Steve Lawler’s VIVA Music, Desert Hearts Records, Deadmau5’s Mau5trap, Yousef’s Circus Recordings, Josh Butler’s Origins, Kevin Saunderson’s KMS Records, Katerblau Berlin’s Katermukke Records, and more. Her release "Give It Up For Me” on Mau5trap earned Sydney a #1 hit on Beatport for over 3 months. With multiple top ten records since then, Sydney continues to chart every year, including another recent top ten “Mind Games” on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound which was premiered by Billboard Magazine. March 2021 was the release of Sydney’s sophomore album Conviction, a meticulously produced, dance floor-driven collection of electronic music, with synth-laden 80’s inspired lead single Monologue, featuring Azari & III singer Fritz Helder, transitioning into various shades of deep, tech, and melodic house. Perhaps, her most fully realized body of work to date, Conviction, earned her a JUNO nomination for Electronic Album of the Year and climbed to the top of Beatport’s Top 10 in Afrohouse, Deep House, Minimal House, Melodic and Tech house. Her lead singles Conspiracy, Temple, and To the Ground were playlisted on Electronic Rising, Organica, and Housework. The LP also received media praise from outlets Mixmag, 6am Group, Data Transmission, Electronic Groove, Musicis4lovers, Beyond Fashion Magazine, HOLR Fashion Mag, and garnered radio play from Danny Howard of BBC Radio 1, Sirius XM Radio, and CBC Radio 1’s George Stromboulopoulos. In late 2021, Sydney launched the #23by23 campaign with the help of Native Instruments and a run of A-list record labels. The campaign’s aim is to encourage labels to increase their percentage of female producers to 23% or more by the end of 2023. To support this initiative, Label Radar is hosting remix competitions and demo challenges with some major labels participating in the campaign like SOMA Records, HE.SHE.THEY, Anjunadeep, Insomniac Records, Poker Flat Recordings, Hospital Records, Toolroom Records, Club Sweat, Gorgon City’s Realm Records, Soma Records, Desert Hearts, Walker and Royce’s Rules Don’t Apply, Circus Recordings and more. Sydney has also taken #23by23 around the globe speaking about the importance of diversity on dance labels this past year at Amsterdam Dance Event, International Music Summit (Ibiza) and Berlin Dance Event. One of Sydney’s greatest accomplishments to date has been her recent successful advocation for a new category at Canada’s largest award show ‘The JUNO Awards’. For four years, Sydney gathered Canada’s top managers, agents, publicists, festival owners, club owners and artists in dance music to help urge The Canadian Academy of Arts and Sciences to make a new award that represents the origins of electronic music called ‘Underground Dance Single of the Year’. The category was successfully accepted by the JUNO’s in June 2021 and will present its first award in 2022 with Sydney Blu as its Chairwoman. With no signs of slowing down, expect many new upcoming releases from Sydney Blu in 2024 and a full touring schedule. Local support from long-time Ottawa favourite JOE JUAREZ on opening duties, and ALAMUSIC setting the vibe during HoppyHour. - A limited quantity of tickets are available online (before 12am) - Table reservations/packages are recommended for groups and available online - Walk-ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To lighten our hearts and souls after the long, dark, cold months, the Festival is delighted to present the fabled Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a Benefit Concert & Social on April 3, 2024, 6:30pm at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (355 Cooper St. on the corner of Cooper and O’Connor Streets). For 60 years, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album introduced the iconic group to the world. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their [Ladysmith Black Mambazo] singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” – Paul Simon Founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, the three elements of the group’s name comes from the founder’s hometown of Ladysmith, the black ox (considered to be the strongest farm animal), and mambazo, which means axe in Zulu (symbolic of the choir's ability to "chop down" the competition) – Wikipedia. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honour. “Undulating rhythmic phrases that push and pull … harmonizing that is both ethereal and earthy.” – World Music, UK Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people, singing a message of peace, love and harmony. With their 2024 release, Soothe My Soul…Songs From Our South African Church, the group puts their own spin on gospel music. The Social includes complimentary canapés, a cash bar and mystery martinis with exciting gift items! Mystery Martini packages may contain anything from restaurant vouchers, gift baskets, trips, spa & salon outings, merchandise, adventure packages and so much more. You just never know, it’s a special mystery – just for you! Doors open & Social at 6:30pm Benefit Concert at 8pm THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2024 AT 8 PM - 11 PM Annie-Claude Deschenes (+TBA) @SAW Centre 67 Nicholas St. Event: https://fb.me/e/1uTwO7IAw Tickets: Tickets · $17.31 - $22.63www.eventbrite.ca/e/annie-claude-deschenes-tickets-811735271047 Multidisciplinarity is an integral part of Annie-Claude Deschênes’ creative process, who continues her perpetual personal quest of uniting music and performance art by bending the pre-established conventions of stage presence. A key figure on the Montreal independent music scene for almost twenty years, she made her mark as a singer, musician, songwriter, performer and visual artist with Duchess Says and PyPy, two bands that are renowned as much for their electrifying performances as for their artistic sensibility. Her exploratory approach to staging and sound design takes a new direction with the genesis of this solo project: the urgency that characterizes her work remains, but frustration and aggression give way to introspection and vulnerability. Annie-Claude Deschênes explores and reinvents herself under her own name, driven by a constant need to create outside her comfort zone. Inspired by minimal pop and the pioneers of electronic music, Les manières de table, her first solo album due out in spring 2024, is as danceable and melodic as it is disquieting and dystopian, proposing to set the table differently by deconstructing the social codes of politeness imposed on us. https://www.bonsound.com/en/artist/annie-claude-deschenes/ All ages / licensed event. Keyboardist Mary Ancheta is a Canadian / Filipina artist who steps into the spotlight with her genre-bending, organic, modern take on jazz and electro-funk. Inspired by the likes of Squarepusher, The Meters, John Scofield, and Prince, Ancheta knows what’s up when it comes to arresting melodies and irresistible grooves with Trent Otter on drums, Dominic Conway on sax, and Matt Reid on bass. Encompassing her experience in film scoring, Ancheta seeks to tap into raw-fuelled moments favouring grittiness over perfection. The Mary Ancheta Quartet will perform songs from their highly anticipated debut EP, Level Up. Last summer, they played on the Mainstage to Jazz Festival audiences all across Canada alongside Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Sun Ra Arkestra, Domi & JD Beck, Melody Gardot, and more.
