Friday Drive
Friday March 1st, 2024 with Trevor Walker
[DigitalFileDrive]

Happy Friday Drivers! On this Friday I’ll be featuring some promos and selections from my much neglected digital music library. Vinyl is my favourite format but so much music comes out and is available digitally it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. You can expect the usual more mellow vibes in the “unwinding from the work week” first hour and I’ll be taking the tempo up to wind you all up for the weekend in the second hour. Hope you all enjoy this week’s playlist! Thank you for taking the time and hope you dig the selections.

SESSION GROUND RULES
We want to make sure that all of our artists and models are comfortable, respected, and able to work effectively! Here are some ground rules for our Life Drawing sessions to help make that happen.
1. Please keep all electronics off or silenced during the session.
2. Please only enter/exit the session in the breaks between poses.
3. Keep your voices down and conversations to a minimum while the model is posing. We love when local artists connect, but please wait for the halfway break or step outside to do so!
4. Artists own the work they produce during the session, and may share and distribute it how they wish. Models will never be identified by their full names.
5. Under no circumstances is the model to be touched or photographed by artists.
6. Comments, concerns, or feedback about any part of the session should be discussed directly with the facilitator.
If you have any questions or input for our ground rules, send us a message!

Tickets:
Tickets · $35 - $45www.eventbrite.ca/e/moov-ottawa-presents-locking-workshop-mini-dance-battle-with-tash-tickets-823627260307

Moov is back in the city for a quick second to bring on a dope workshop by another Canadian respected artist - "Tash" from Montreal! And, we’ll be bringing her out to judge a mini battle as well!
ABOUT TASH: Natasha "Tash" Jean-Bart was born in 1971 in Montreal, Canada. She is an accomplished professional dancer, teacher and choreographer. Various companies, organizations, corporate events, theaters, competitions, and artists in development actively seek her out for her fundamental yet progressive approach to teaching, consulting, coaching, and mentoring. Her professional career spans over thirty-eight years in the performing arts, renowned for her Hip Hop dance mastery; her specialities range from a deep understanding of original street dance styles to their application within the various theatrical, battle, and commercial stages.
Natasha Jean-Bart grew up alongside Hip Hop culture. She began her pilgrimage between Montreal and Los Angeles to learn myriads of street dance fundamentals, foundations and techniques in the late '90s. She was trained thoroughly by the creators and original pioneers of our street dance culture. Her teachers are non-others than the late Don "Campbellock" Campbell (Creator of the Campbellocking aka Locking Art-form, founder of The Lockers group), the late Greg "Campbellock Jr Pope (The Lockers,) Jimmy Scoo B Doo Foster (Soul Train dancer,) Damita Jo Freeman (Queen of Soul Train,) Timothy "Popin Pete" Solomon, Adolfo "Shabba Doo" Quinones (The Lockers,) the late Stephen "Skeeter Rabbit" Nichols (Electric Boogaloos) and many more.
Tash is an international elite competitive judge. She held the Canadian Judge position for Hip Hop International (HHI) in 2004 and was promoted in 2005 to Head Judge duties (2005-2010.) In 2017, she was the selected Locking Judge for Juste Debout International Tour 2018 with a 15-country agenda. Since then, she has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, Asia, South America, and the United States to spread knowledge and share her love of street dance art forms.
In 2005, she landed a three-year contract for the original "Lady Madonna" lead role in "The Beatles LOVE" created by Cirque du Soleil at MGM Mirage in Las Vegas. She was also hired as a 'Street Dance Generalist' coach for the creation/workshop portion held at Montreal's CDS headquarters. She transitioned into an on-call Locking instructor for Cirque Du Soleil's Vegas resident shows for the last ten years. Her mandate is to maintain the 'Locking" art form at a high-performance level, which is imperative for the show's integrity both artistically and technically. In 2006, she was invited as a faculty teacher for the Elite Locking Camp hosted/produced by Greg "Campbellock Jr" Pope and organized by Frank Sams. The camp, held yearly in Las Vegas, was entrusted to her in 2014, who now runs it with her husband, Ghislain Malardier, through their Wättssoul Inc company. They rebranded the ELC camp to LAS VEGAS LOCKING CAMP (LVLC).
Recently she served as a Rehearsal Director for Montreal's Ebnflōh Dance company under the artistic direction of Alexandra "Spicey" Landé. Tash is also a member of Bboyizm Dance company under the artistic direction of Yvon "Bboy Crazy Smooth) Soglo, co-produced with CCOV with the "In My Body" piece touring all across Canada and internationally from 2022 to 2024.
Natasha Jean-Bart, aka "Tash", is the Co-Founder, CEO-Creative Director of Wättssoul Inc, a U.S.-based company dedicated to nurturing and empowering creativity, arts, and cultural awareness. She is often called a bridge and continues to accompany dancers throughout their careers. She is a writer who contributes to Theatre Art Life's Entertainment platform: Global Media Site, UK Hip Hop Dance Almanac “Ink Cypher” and other online publication platforms. She is the creator of TashFormula© — a Street Dance Platform designed to help and guide both teachers and students by providing history, tools, context and simple formulas to achieve mastery of the vast street dance landscape. She also serves as Artistic Consultant/Advisor in Hip Hop and gives workshops and lectures internationally.

White Rabbit & City At Night proudly present:

TUBE & BERGER - Germany
(Kittball, Defected, Toolroom, Suara, FFRR)

Tube & Berger started their musical journey over a decade ago. Since then, the house producers released two acclaimed studio albums, played gigs around the world and have over 60 million YouTube plays to their name. From early experiments in the world of Punk music, the German duo’s first breakthrough came with their 2004 hit ‘Straight Ahead’, which featured the vocals of The Pretender's Chrissie Hynde and shot straight to the top of the Billboard Dance Radio Chart. Since this early success, their output has evolved significantly, through incorporating real-life recordings and samples into their music. Their intricate, emotion-laden production style creates records that are organic and evocative, without losing that dancefloor punch essential for the modern-day DJ.
Tube & Berger have undoubtedly shaped the Deep House genre, crafting several scene defining records in the last couple of years. More notably is ‘Imprint of Pleasure’, a heart-wrenchingly poignant dance floor anthem released on Suara Records that was named Beatport’s 9thTop Selling Track of All Time, racked up a hefty 32 million streams on Spotify and has provided the soundtrack for festivals and dance floors for over many years.
Last year, Tube & Berger and Junior Jack's collaboration track "E Samba 2018" peaked at No.2 on the Beatport main chart and was No.1 in their House Chart for 6 weeks in Summer, gaining huge DJ support from the likes of Pete Tong, Erick Morillo, Fisher, Claptone, Flashmob and Nora En Pure.
Along with friend and fellow DJ Juliet Sikora they run the labels Kittball Records and ZEHN Records. Next to releasing their own tracks, both labels have signed prominent artists like &ME, Andhim, Betoko, Dennis Cruz, Djuma Soundsystem, Ida Engberg, illyus & Barrientos, Purple Disco Machine, Township Rebellion and many more. On Kittball, Tube & Berger released their debut studio album ‘Introlution’ back in 2012. Their second album ‘WE ARE ALL STARS’ was released in May 2017.
In terms of live performances –Tube & Berger never tire. Tube & Berger are proved Ibiza heavyweights with frequent shows at ANTS in Ushuaia and Booom! Ibiza. Festival-wise they had sets at Tomorrowland, Loveweek Festival, Eastport Festival, Claptone's Masquerade and played dates at ADE including 'All Gone Pete Tong' and multiple Toolroom Showcases.

Pique is back with the spring edition opener of its 2024 season bringing groundbreaking international and Canadian artists to the Arts Court in downtown Ottawa. For the first time, Pique will present a multi-day edition of its acclaimed music and art festival series happening on March 8–10, 2024. Transforming the Arts Court into a dynamic venue-wide celebration, Pique is a seasonal showcase of underground and avant-garde performance, visual art, and more.
The 2024 Pique spring edition is all about experimentation, exploration and expecting the unexpected. Many of the artists featured at the spring edition are innovators in their own right, bending genres, trailblazing new technologies, or delving deeper into unexplored capabilities. While this edition invites audience members to challenge themselves and listen deeply, there are still plenty of opportunities for silliness and celebration. Charting a course that explores both mind and body, thinking and acting, Pique spring edition offers a full range of creative possibilities.
The all-ages festival will present more than 15 artists across 7 stages and exhibition spaces, including groundbreaking audio/visual performances, DJ sets, performance art, exhibitions, and more. Tickets to Pique are pay-what-you-can, and the Pique live stream is free to watch online.
Admission is SLIDING SCALE with a suggested contribution of $25-$50.

NIGHT OF THE ONE MAN BANDS!
@House of TARG
1077 Bank St.
Event:
https://fb.me/e/1RcBrV1SK
Tickets: $15 | 19+

ARE YOU READY? IT’S THE… NIGHT OF THE ONE-MAN BANDS!
How many instruments can one human being strap to their body at the same time and not fall over? There's only one way to find out.
Night of the One-Man Bands features Ottawa's own Lefty & His Right-Hand Band, along with guests Jon Cohen Experimental (Montreal), Mississippi Grover (Kingston) and Snowheel Slim (Hamilton). Each one-man band brings a unique sound to the party, from apocalyptic circus music to swampy garage rock, from electrofolkpop to high-octane chicken-boogie.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
LEFTY & HIS RIGHT-HAND BAND (Ottawa)
A one-man band like no other, Lefty & His Right-Hand Band fuses psychobilly and murder ballads into an unholy mixture of apocalyptic good times, a freakshow rollercoaster of emotions driven by thundering bass lines and foot-powered drums. Themes include whisky, the end of the world, more whisky.
JON COHEN EXPERIMENTAL (MTL)
Fantasy prom king, master crafter of cult-pop gems and multi-threat instrumentalist Jon Cohen Experimental creates sweet but potent stories that spring from curiosity. This dynamic one-man band's beguiling art rock inventions and melodic hooks promise a sultry escape from those pesky workaday hang-ups. At times folksy, indie and at times grungy, the E.L.O vs. 90’s vibe is raw and unapologetic.
MISSISSIPPI GROVER (Kingston )
Mississippi Grover is NOT from Mississippi, though he did ride a train through there once... In early 2005, Mississippi Grover rose from the ashes of The Desecrators (Ottawa), born again as a one-man band, playing swampy garage and primitive blues punk stuff, also known as rock 'n' roll. He has been driving around since then, dazzling audiences of all sorts with his moonshiny gumbo of sound. That's right, he's a one-man travelling-medicine-show, and his tonic is SONIC, baby!
SNOWHEEL SLIM (Blackheath/Hamilton)
Snow-Heel Slim is a one-man chicken-boogie outfit armed with raunch geetar and a gas-can bass-drum. He plays an array of his own hits as well as some from the long lost and unsung.

The 44th Ottawa Jazz Festival is a little more than 4 months away. To lighten our hearts and souls after the long, dark, cold months, the Festival is delighted to present the fabled Ladysmith Black Mambazo in a Benefit Concert & Social on April 3, 2024, 6:30pm at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre (355 Cooper St. on the corner of Cooper and O’Connor Streets).
For 60 years, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album introduced the iconic group to the world. “It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their [Ladysmith Black Mambazo] singing that rivets the attention, but the sheer joy and love that emanates from their being.” – Paul Simon

Founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960, the three elements of the group’s name comes from the founder’s hometown of Ladysmith, the black ox (considered to be the strongest farm animal), and mambazo, which means axe in Zulu (symbolic of the choir's ability to "chop down" the competition) – Wikipedia. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honour.
“Undulating rhythmic phrases that push and pull … harmonizing that is both ethereal and earthy.” – World Music, UK
Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people, singing a message of peace, love and harmony. With their 2024 release, Soothe My Soul…Songs From Our South African Church, the group puts their own spin on gospel music.
The Social includes complimentary canapés, a cash bar and mystery martinis with exciting gift items! Mystery Martini packages may contain anything from restaurant vouchers, gift baskets, trips, spa & salon outings, merchandise, adventure packages and so much more. You just never know, it’s a special mystery – just for you!

Multidisciplinarity is an integral part of Annie-Claude Deschênes’ creative process, who continues her perpetual personal quest of uniting music and performance art by bending the pre-established conventions of stage presence. A key figure on the Montreal independent music scene for almost twenty years, she made her mark as a singer, musician, songwriter, performer and visual artist with Duchess Says and PyPy, two bands that are renowned as much for their electrifying performances as for their artistic sensibility. Her exploratory approach to staging and sound design takes a new direction with the genesis of this solo project: the urgency that characterizes her work remains, but frustration and aggression give way to introspection and vulnerability. Annie-Claude Deschênes explores and reinvents herself under her own name, driven by a constant need to create outside her comfort zone. Inspired by minimal pop and the pioneers of electronic music, Les manières de table, her first solo album due out in spring 2024, is as danceable and melodic as it is disquieting and
dystopian, proposing to set the table differently by deconstructing the social codes of politeness imposed on us.

Avant-garde saxophonist & multireedist Colin Stetson returns to Ottawa for an intimate performance at St Albans Church, joined by sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA

Colin Stetson’s recorded output, not to mention studio and live collaborations – with, among others, Lou Reed, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Chemical Brothers, Bon Iver and Bill Laswell – has proven as prolific as it’s praiseworthy. Since the 21st century’s early years, he’s gained a well-deserved reputation as an exceptional musician, his devotion to craft consummate, his commitment to innovation indisputable. Known for assertive, powerhouse performances on the saxophone – chiefly bass and alto, but also soprano, tenor and baritone – for many years he was a wrestler, a sport whose “insane physical extremes” he credits with his style, alongside, among other things, a love for acts like Pixies and Fugazi. He’s similarly at home, though, whatever the musical context, on clarinet, flute, French Horn and cornet. One might even say he operates in a field all his own.
It was at university that Stetson first began playing regularly, “searching, reaching, and exploring the instrument” with Transmission (later Transmission Trio), before heading to San Francisco after graduating and, six years later, Brooklyn. Contributions were made to other artists’ recordings, not least Tom Waits’, and he made his own lowkey records too. It wasn’t, though, until 2007 that his breakthrough album, New History Warfare Vol. 1, was released, and this coincided with his drafting by Arcade Fire, with whom he’d play until 2010. That year he moved to Montreal to join his future (but now ex-) wife, the band’s Sarah Neufeld, with whom he recorded 2015’s Never Were The Way She Was, and the following year he released Sorrow, an extraordinary reimagining of Gorecki’s legendary Symphony of Sorrow. In-between he completed the New History Warfare trilogy, a virtuosic illustration of the “world-building”, as he calls it, that’s critical to much of his solo work, while 2017’s All This I Do for Glory consolidated his reputation, earning multiple nominations for critics’ Album of the Year lists.
Stetson’s nature is defiantly single-minded, and his dogged focus is always evident, his swooping, circling and soaring motifs displaying as much sensitivity as strength. This is something to which his striking – and diverse – contributions to film, TV and game scores also powerfully attest, including, most recently, 2018’s Hereditary and Red Dead Redemption 2, 2021’s Among The Stars, and 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Menu. As distinguished broadcaster Mary Anne Hobbs once observed, Colin Stetson is “an artist that can change the way you actually think about music.”

FUJI||||||||||TA is a Sound Artist living in Japan. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and noises. In 2009 Fujita hand fabricated a Pipe Organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Fujita conceived and built it using his imagination, without any prior or specialized knowledge. Designed to create a landscape rather than function as a musical instrument, he took the idea from the Japanese “gagaku”. The air pump (called “FUIGO”) which is kept moving by the left hand when playing, and is based on associations with an ancient blacksmith. This is a unique instrument that Fujita had to learn to play. Recently, he has added a water element, with sound synthesized water tanks, to his performance repertoire. The music consists of water sounds from multiple aquariums alongside his pipe organ and his voice.
Since 2006 he has had many solo performances and collaborative works with musicians, including ∈Y∋ (Boredoms), Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, and Koichi Makigami. He has presented his sound installation works in many contexts: the work “CELL”, which made audible the sounds of black soldier fly maggots buried in dirt, was exhibited in Sapporo International Art Festival 2017 and attracted a great deal of interest in Fujita’s artistic practice. A performance with an organ and 4 water tanks were performed in MODE (London) in 2019. In 2020, he released the albums “iki” [Hallow Ground] and “KŌMORI” [Boomkat Editions]
