The Guest List
Thursday January 9th, 2025 with Joe Reilly
We talk to Kyp Harness about his 18th album kick the dust.

The Guest List is sponsored by Spaceman Music, located at 388 Bank Street, just west of Bank. Visit Spaceman for all of your music making needs and don't forget they have a great repair shop and offer music lessons. Check out Spaceman online at: https://www.spacemanmusic.com/ Any regular listener knows how much I admire the stellar songwriting of Kyp Harness and his long string of incredible albums dating back to 1991. He released album #18 in 2024, kick the dust and it is another strong collection of songs that call out rampant consumerism and the the indifference of the wealthy while celebrating the simple and important things in life like friendship, connection and love. Kyp joins us today to talk about the pared back production on this album and how it suits the ideas he's exploring in song on kick the dust. We talk about his enduring conviction to speak for ordinary people in song and how he keeps releasing great music despite the fact that he garners marginal attention for his great body of work. He makes a lot of sense both in song and in conversation... and I love his wry sense of humour that's apparent in his music and when he shares his thoughts on the state of the world. Everyone's excited about a biopic about the iconoclastic Dylan... but don't forget that we need iconoclasts today... and Kyp Harness is the real deal in that department - a troubadour who comments on the state of the world and can really make you think about life differently through his songs. I could not resist ending the show with his fantastic song Low Dishonourable Men from 2014 - it's a song that got me through the final years of the Harper regime here in Canada and seems sadly perfect again for what we are seeing south of the border and with the rising stature of "he who must not be named" here in Canada. He's not labelled PP for nothing. Sorry... I got off on a tangent there. Enjoy and consider supporting Kyp Harness by purchasing some of his reasonably priced albums at his Bandcamp site: https://kypharness.bandcamp.com/ And visit his website at: https://kypharness.net/ Thanks for listening and support independent music in any way that you can!

I guess you'd rather have the non-repentant grand daughter of a nazi as pm! I dont like PP either but what choice do we have?

Hi. So I guess this is a reference to Chrystia Freeland and family background - and I'm no big fan of her but do we all want to be judged by the actions of our grandparents... probably not. Mr. PP is a negative, attack dog who has not expressed any positive policies that he would bring in to help Canadians and you can bet that he will dismantle as much as he can of the social safety net that has been built up in Canada over the decades. It's easy to rant about what's wrong - it's harder to fix it. He is a giant fan of leaving market economics to direct our lives - but what is responsible for the crushing cost of housing and groceries - Justin Trudeau?.... don't be fooled.... it's market economics working to do this to Canadians. And he will set back environmental initiatives in a big way... and in case nobody noticed it's Los Angeles that is burning down now... not just remote communities in Alberta. Heaven help us... We have choices. We must make them wisely

I am not sure what the "commercial radio" thumbs down is about. Is this is a negative response to the sponsorship of Spaceman Music and running ads for our sponsor on this show I would like to respond to that. First of all, we operate this not-for-profit radio station in a system that requires capital/money to pay the bills and the wages of our core staff to keep it running. We derive our operating budget from a student levy at Carleton and public support of our annual funding drive but we require more diverse revenues to meet our daily costs. The CRTC allows us to have a limited advertising licence so we can air ads. In this case, this ad is for an independent, musician-owned music shop that sells instruments and accessories, and offers services like repairs and music lessons. Spaceman exists to service the local music community and to ensure that some great musicians in Ottawa earn a living while working there. This seems like the perfect sponsor for a radio show that is dedicated to promoting the works of artists and encouraging people to get out to see live music in our community. The ads were created with staff from Spaceman and they wanted them to be fun and informative. We are happy to promote their services and to accept their sponsorship to support CKCU and our operation costs. I think that's a great symbiotic relationship and hope you can understand the positive nature of this. Thanks for your feedback
