We open in conversation with Geraldine Hollett, who is a member of the wonderful Newfoundland trio The Once. The group has just released its fifth album Out Here and will be coming to Ottawa to perform in the Babs Asper Theatre of the National Arts Centre on Thursday, March 21. We talk to Geraldine about how the group got together and how they have developed the amazing harmonies that The Once is known for. We also talk about working with producer Daniel Ledwell and how the group took it to another level with this new recording. I also ask Geraldine about the evolution of her singing voice, which reminds me of Emmy Lou Harris on Out Here, and how they are touring with backing musicians on this tour.

Kevin is perhaps best known as the leader of one of Canada's finest musical collectives, Broken Social Scene. He has also released a string of great solo albums over the years, including one of the best records of 2023 entitled Aging. We talk about how some of the songs on this album were inspired by friends and family members who died over the past few years and how some of the songs have long, instrumental openings that really draw us in. We talk about how he will be appearing in concert with Daniel Ledwell (yup, the producer of the new album by The Once) and how he will structure the set.
In 2023 she released the album 1988 - one of her finest recordings in a career that includes 12 exceptional albums. As with her previous releases, many of the songs on this album tap into and shed light on her personal family life and there is a good dose of nostalgia as well. I am constantly amazed at how Lori draws us into her life in her songs, yet she also leaves room for us as listeners to find ourselves in her songs. The connection I feel with her music is hard to put into words and others I've spoken to say the same thing.

In fact, in 2019, while talking to Donovan Woods on this program about an upcoming concert, he unveiled a new single called "While All the While" and told me he had co-written it with Lori McKenna. My mind literally exploded on the air that day and I interrupted Donovan and we went down a rabbit hole discussing her craft and her voice. Donovan Woods is part of a large group of singer-songwriters and country music artists who love and admire McKenna and her songs. I have included the clip from that Donovan Woods interview on the program today because it's fun, I enjoy hearing my brain explode on the air and it serves as a great introduction to Lori McKenna and her work.

During my interview with Lori McKenna we do go back to her early recordings, but we really focus on her amazing album 1988. She is gracious and as warm and engaging as one would expect after listening to her songs.

I hope you enjoy listening to this show today, even half as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

We didn't connect with Lynn about this album last year, so I decided to dedicate an entire program to her latest recording as it is one of the best albums released in 2023. We talk about how the album has a country and bluegrass vibe and how Lynn managed to keep it very simple in the studio while making this recording. We also hear some stories about great co-writes on this album and how special they are, and Lynn's thoughts about touring in the future.

They released a beautiful album in 2023, titled The best that I can be. It is one of my favourite albums of the past year, so I decided to invite Andrew onto the show to talk about the recording and what went into making it. We talk about how vocals and lyrics work in Sunnsetter's songs and about how all of the sounds on the album are created by Andrew. Enjoy this chance to really dig into one of the best albums of 2023.

James is originally from Chelsea and he now lives in Minnesota, but he's coming home for the holidays and will be playing a concert in Chelsea on Saturday (Dec. 23) at La Fab Sur Mill. We talk to James about the significance of the name he uses when creating music, what he likes about Minnesota and what to expect from his concert this weekend.
Then we check in with one of my favourite singer-songwriters around, John Southworth. John has not been on the Guest List since 2011 and that's partly because he hasn't played a show in Ottawa since around then... which is a shame as he has created a great body of amazing music since his last visit to the Ottawa area. And it's also a shame that I haven't checked in with him until now! We talk about his songwriting process and some of the beautiful, and often whimsical themes he explores in his songs. We also touch upon how these songs really strike a chord with challenges we face in our world today, like the negative environments created on social media. This is a fun and lively conversation with a man who is truly inventive in his craft of song creation and who brings a much needed gentle voice to our whacky world. Sadly, there are no scheduled concerts for John in our area... but you can be sure I'll let you know if there is one upcoming in the future.
