Interviews with Geraldine Hollett of The Once and Kevin Drew

We open in conversation with Geraldine Hollett, who is a member of the wonderful Newfoundland trio The Once. The group has just released its fifth album Out Here and will be coming to Ottawa to perform in the Babs Asper Theatre of the National Arts Centre on Thursday, March 21. We talk to Geraldine about how the group got together and how they have developed the amazing harmonies that The Once is known for. We also talk about working with producer Daniel Ledwell and how the group took it to another level with this new recording. I also ask Geraldine about the evolution of her singing voice, which reminds me of Emmy Lou Harris on Out Here, and how they are touring with backing musicians on this tour. Kevin is perhaps best known as the leader of one of Canada's finest musical collectives, Broken Social Scene. He has also released a string of great solo albums over the years, including one of the best records of 2023 entitled Aging. We talk about how some of the songs on this album were inspired by friends and family members who died over the past few years and how some of the songs have long, instrumental openings that really draw us in. We talk about how he will be appearing in concert with Daniel Ledwell (yup, the producer of the new album by The Once) and how he will structure the set.
