Thursday September 22nd, 2022 with Joe Reilly
Alexander Shelley the Musical Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra talks about the Sphere Festival and Scott Hardware talks about his upcoming performance at Pique Fall Edition

NOTE: This On Demand edition of the Guest List includes almost 15 minutes of additional material - including more interview segments with Alexander Shelley and Scott Hardware and longer musical pieces. Enjoy. Alexander Shelley is the Musical Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and he joins us today to talk about the National Arts Centre's bold undertaking, the Sphere Festival. Shelley tells us why he enjoys creating and presenting festivals and musical series that cross genres and different artistic disciplines. He also talks about two amazing pieces the NACO will perform this week as part of the Sphere Festival. On Thursday night (Sept. 22nd) the orchestra will perform Max Richter's Recomposed - a bold reimagining of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/30521 On Saturday night, the Orchestra will perform John Luther Adams's immersive musical work Become Ocean. Adams attempts to put us in the oceans of the world sonically with this work, and Shelley explains some of the unique challenges around performing it - including its 43 minute running time with no breaks. https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/30522 You can explore the music of John Luther Adams on Bandcamp. https://johnlutheradams.bandcamp.com For more information about the National Arts Centre's Sphere Festival use this link. There is a lot going on as part of it. https://nac-cna.ca/en/sphere Speaking of "a lot going on," Artscourt will once again be taken over by a wide variety of artists presenting works from varied artistic disciplines as part of Pique the Fall Edition 2022. Pique will be running this Saturday at ArtsCourt starting at 5 p.m. and continuing into the wee hours of the morning. Scott Hardware will be appearing as part of Pique the Fall Edition, in the Artscourt Theatre at 11 p.m. on Saturday (June 24). Scott Hardware joins us today to talk about his latest album Ballad Of A Tryhard and what to expect in concert on Saturday. The album features lush, deep musical arrangements and Hardware explains how they came about for songs that are both nostalgic and deeply personal.
