The Guest List

Amazing interview with Franklin Fisher, singer & lyricist for the American rock band Algiers. The band's album There Is No Year, released in January, seems prophetic in its exploration of themes of inequity, reckoning, race, anxiety, disconnection & chaos
Today we talk to Franklin James Fisher - the lead vocalist and lyricist for the American rock band Algiers. To date the group has released three powerful albums on the Matador label, and if you go to the group's Bandcamp site you can find some other interesting releases there as well.

The group merges musical approaches ranging from punk to gospel and there is plenty of powerful soul in the sound of Algiers. The group's third album, There Is No Year, takes its title from a Blake Butler novel of the same name and it feels like a prophecy for the chaotic times we are living in.
We talk to Franklin Fisher about those themes, about the process of recording There Is No Year and since he is an African-American we talk about race relations in the US. If you want to understand more about some of the ideas we discuss you may want to check out the group's video segments with the author Blake Butler on the band's website.

Last week we spoke to Shad about his album A Short Story About A War. This album and Algiers' There Is No Year are important artistic works that truly reflect the state of the world and our place in it... give them a listen.
