Interviews with Said the Whale, Veda Hillie, Grandson and Lefty McRighty about the Johnny Cash Birthday Bash

A jam packed show with great conversations about music today on the show. We open things up with Ben Worcester of Said the Whale. The group has just released another solid album full of great songs titled "Cascadia" and Said the Whale will be in Ottawa on March 7th at the Algonquin Commons Theatre opening up for Mother Mother. Ben tells us that Mother Mother is putting on amazing shows and that this is a great double bill to check out. He fills us in on how his bandmate Tyler Bancroft just underwent emergency surgery to remove his appendix and how they still intend to be on the road later this week. We also talk about paying tribute to Dan Mangan, Ben's Father and David Bowie on the new album that is full of diverse and engaging songs. https://saidthewhale.com/ https://www.algonquinsa.com/event/mother-mother-dance-and-cry-tour/ Next up we check in with another BC-based artist, Veda Hillie. Veda has built a very strong career as a singer-songwriter and a composer who has worked in film and theatre. We talk today about her new project, an album that captures the music from a musical theatre production called King Arthur's Night. Veda tells us about the partnership she shares with the playwrights and how she wanted to work with choirs on this project in particular. https://vedahille.com/?v=3e8d115eb4b3 Then we check in with Grandson. Grandson is about to release a new e.p. titled a "Modern Tragedy Vol. 2" and will be appearing at Babylon on Saturday night, February 23. Grandson is Jordan Benjamin and we have a very interesting conversation that delves into how well the blues ties into hip hop sounds and what defines cultural appropriation. And while Grandson sings that he's not going to apologize in the song we featured, Jordan admits that a lot of people in power have plenty to apologize for! It's an engaging and far-reaching conversation. Check out his e.p. https://grandsonmusic.com/apologize/?ref=Typed/Bookmarked Finally we hear from Lefty McRighty and he tells us all about the 9th Annual Johnny Cash Birthday bash which is happening this Saturday night at the Rainbow Bistro and is a benefit for CKCU-FM again this year! https://www.facebook.com/events/1272050029602102/ Get out and see some live music this week and buy music created by artists because we want these artists to keep making great music for us!
