The Guest List
Thursday November 1st, 2018 with Joe Reilly and Slo' Tom
Interviews with They Might Be Giants, Fucked Up and The Young Novelists and Joe and Tom overcome a computer meltdown live on the air!

Wow what a screwball funding drive show!! Thanks to Slo' Tom for coming in to co-host this funding drive show and for filling up time while I dealt with a myriad of whacky computer issues. First up, John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants called in to talk about the longevity of They Might Be Giants and the art of songwriting - notably writing, fun satirical songs that force us to re-examine things in our world. They Might Be Giants are at the Bronson Centre tonight, November 1. https://www.theymightbegiants.com/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1689403-they-might-be-giants-ottawa/ Next up ... the computer melted down and Mike Haliechuk of Fucked Up called in late and then got cut off by a phone problem. So you may want to listen to this show for the hilarity of Joe and Tom trying to keep the show together while they find new songs by Fucked Up on the internet and try to connect with Mike. When we finally get Mike on the line we talk to him about the direction on the new album - including the diversity of sound on the album and a wide range of singers. We also talk about how the show on Saturday night (November 3) at the 27 Club will feature a wide range of songs from various albums - it won't be a play through of the new album even though it is a concept album with a narrative running through it. http://fuckedup.cc/home/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1734683-fucked-up-ottawa/ Sadly we cut off Mike to make way for the Dodos - as the band is in town on Monday night (November 5) at the 27 Club - but nobody from the Dodos managed to call in unfortunately. The group's new album Certainty Wave is a good one so get out to see them on Monday night if you can. https://dodosmusic.net/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1745158-dodos-ottawa/ Finally we check in with Graydon James of the Young Novelists, as the band will be performing at the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield on Saturday night (Nov. 3). We talk about breaking the group down to a duo and how every song on the album In City and Country is about a small town in Ontario. http://theyoungnovelists.com/ https://www.theblacksheepinn.com/ Get out and see some live music this week and keep supporting CKCU Joe
