The Guest List
Thursday November 8th, 2018 with Joe Reilly
Interviews with Emma Francis of RBC Bluesfest about local bands applying, the Zolas, Jim Bryson (about the After The Storm benefit concert), Long Range Hustle and the Good Lovelies (whew!)

One of those kooky busy shows with 5 guests today.... and we kick it off with Emma Francis from the RBC Bluesfest and CityFolk. Emma talks about the process for local artists to apply to play at those festivals and Marvest. She tells us that different criteria is used for the different events and that applications must be in by December 31 this year. Go to the Bluesfest website for more information and the application forms. https://ottawabluesfest.ca/artist-submissions/# The we check in with Zach Gray of the Zolas. The band is in town next week, Saturday, November 17 to play at the Bronson Centre with Yukon Blonde. The Zolas have just released a new single "Bombs Away" and Zach talks about what went into making that new song and some of the ideas being explored in it - including the idea of ghosting. Expect a new album by the Zolas in 2019. http://thezolasmusic.com/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1725177-yukon-blonde-zolas-ottawa/ Then one of our fav local artists, Jim Bryson manages to escape to the studio to call us - he had to escape his daughters who were apparently (note we said apparently as we cannot verify this) fighting about an iPad application. We talk about how Jim recorded his new e.p. Tired of Waiting in a quick, no nonsense sort of way and how he might make more music this way in the future. We also talk about Jim's participation in the After the Storm benefit concert taking place Saturday (November 10th) at the TD Place Arena (we old folks remember it as the Civic Centre.) He will be on the bill with acts like Jim Cuddy, Jeremy Fisher and Matt Mays and it will be a rare chance to see Sarah Harmer perform as well. https://www.tdplace.ca/event/cupe-503-presents-after-the-storm/ http://www.jimbryson.org/ Then it's on to a conversation with Paul Brogee and Jay Foster of Long Range Hustle. The band is playing at Babylon next Friday, November 16th. We talk about how the band worked with legendary producer Tony Doogan on the new album - which will be out in early 2019. They also talk about what it felt like to be recording in the Bathouse Studio outside Kingston - where the Tragically Hip made such great recordings. (We also have an inconclusive discussion about what might be the best album released by Wintersleep - a group that has been very influential for Long Range Hustle.) http://www.longrangehustle.com/ Finally we chat with Kerri Ough of Good Lovelies about the group's upcoming Christmas/Winter themed concert at the National Arts Centre in the Babs Asper Theater on November 27. We talk about the group's Christmas album and winter-themed album and how they will mix things up for the Ottawa show between those albums and the group's newest release Shapeshifters. http://goodlovelies.com/ https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/19421 Get out and see some live music this week!
