Interviews with Richard Reed Parry (of Arcade Fire), Sarah MacDougall, and Minor Empire

A great funding drive show today. We start off with Richard Reed Parry who many people will be familiar with for his work as a member of Arcade Fire. He has also created amazing music with the Bell Orchestre (and Richard reveals in the interview that a new album by the Bell Orchestre is forthcoming) and he has created neo-classical music for Deutsche Grammophon Records. His new solo album, titled Quiet River of Dust Vol. 1 is Richard's first album featuring his own songs with lyrics and it's a beauty. Richard tells us how the album (and the follow up Vol. 2 which will be released in 2019) came to life and how themes about the natural world became the focus of the recording. He also talks about how the sound of his father's folk band The Friends of Fiddler's Green influenced the direction he took with the sound of the recording. It's a far-reaching conversation that's not unlike the far-reaching album he's released. Be sure to see him bring this music to life at the St. Alban's Church in Ottawa on November 26. http://richardreedparry.com/ https://www.spectrasonic.com/event/1764105-richard-reed-parrys-quiet-ottawa/ Next up we check in with singer-songwriter Sarah MacDougall who has a new album All the Hours I Have Left To Tell You Anything coming out on November 2. We talk to Sarah about some of the themes being explored on the new album and hear how a song like Empire that might seem to be about the messed up state of the world is at its core actually more about the end of an important personal relationship. Sarah talks about how different themes weave their way through her songs and how she worked with different producers to get the sound of this new recording. You can see Sarah perform at the National Arts Centre on Tuesday, October 30. She will be performing with her band so don't miss this show. http://www.sarahmacdougall.com/ https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/19910 Finally, we talk to Ozan Boz of Minor Empire. The group mixes traditional Turkish music with contemporary influences to create a powerful and hypnotic blend. Ozan explains that he does not feel bound by Turkish music traditions and wants to mix whatever works for the music that he and his musical partner Ozgu Ozman want to create. He also talks about the political themes explored in the music. Unfortunately as Ozan was about to explain how Minor Empire would be creating this music live at the National Arts Centre on Sunday, October 28.. his cell phone line died and we never heard. The show should be rhythmic and truly uplifting so don't miss it. http://minorempire.net/ https://nac-cna.ca/en/event/20033 Thanks to everyone who dialed and donated to CKCU's annual funding drive and be sure to keep those donations coming in. We need it to keep this place afloat for another year. And get out to see some live music this week!
