New music from Omar Sosa and Seckou Keita, Ballaké Sissoko, Sofia Gubaidulina. Ragas Live Festival!
First of all, an enormous THANK YOU to everyone who made a pledge to my program and CKCU! There is no CKCU without you! For those who have not made a pledge, we are very happy to accept your donation, just click on the donate now button!
Today we will start with a couple of new releases from Omar Sosa and Ballaké Sissoko. Both these musicians share an affinity, both are masters in their traditions, both are extremely wide ranging and generous in their musical collaborations, and both of them have released two albums this year. Omar Sosa's new album "Suba" is his second with Senegalese kora player and singer Seckou Keita, proving to be a very rewarding partnership for these wonderful musicians. Ballaké Sissoko's 2nd 2021 album "A Touma" is a solo affair, coming after his very collaborative album "Djourou" earlier this year. "A Touma" is a superb album, with all exquisite compositions by Sissoko.

This gorgeous piece "Nan Sira Madi" by Sissoko struck me as very reminiscent of "Laban" by Salif Keita. They are both structured identically with two distinct halves. As well, the second half of "Nan Sira Madi" is very strikingly similar to the second half of "Laban", I can't believe it's an accident. The second half of "Laban" is Salif Keita at his most spectacular, musical magic, so I am not complaining that the second half of "Nan Sira Madi" is also spectacular! |

Ex-Soviet composer Sofia Gubaidulina celebrated her 90th birthday in October and she is still actively composing. The Gewandhausorchetster in Leipzig is celebrating her rich, dramatic, and spiritual music this season and they have released an album with first recordings of three compositions by Gubaidulina. We will hear her third violin concerto "Dialog: Ich und Du" from 2018. |

Last year the annual Ragas Live Festival from New York City, presented by WKCR-FM and Brooklyn Raga Massive was a 24 hour livestreamed event with musicians from around the globe but with no live in-person events due to the pandemic, this was unfortunate for local attendees, but it was a huge opportunity for a new global audience (such as me!) This year, it will be a hybrid affair, with most of the festival being streamed musicians from around the US, India, Pakistan, the UK, but the finale will be Brooklyn Raga Massive and Terry Riley in a live performance of "In D" at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. All 24 hours of the festival including the live performance by Brooklyn Raga Massive can be streamed live here:
https://www.ragaslive.org/broadcast21 The festival begins Friday morning with Brooklyn Raga Massive at 8:30pm EST Saturday night. We will hear the third part of "In D" from their stunning 2020 recording. You can also hear a full performance of "In D" on one of my earlier programs: https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/53009.html |
