New Indian piano music from Utsav Lal; oud and sitar with Hussein El Masry and Narendra Bataju; Matthew Shipp live; more from Ballake Sissoko, Omar Sosa and Seckou Keita
Today we will start with something new from pianist Utsav Lal. Utsav Lal is a unique performer of Hindustani classical music on the piano. He has said that the Indian press always asks him "Why does he play this music on the piano?". I have suggested to him that his simple reply should be "because it sounds fantastic!" which it does! We will hear the first "Raga Shorts" from Utsav Lal, a new series of singles with short raga and raga inspired improvisations. He says "These improvisations are a documentative snapshot of the greater journey of playing this music on the piano." The first single is an alap jod jhala in rag Bhairav. All his music is available through Bandcamp:

You can still hear my in-depth conversation with Utsav Lal from last February on-demand. He goes into a lot of detail about developing new piano technique to be able to perform Indian classical music on this most unsuitable of instruments!
