The New York Times wrote that in her piano playing as well as her compositions, Angelica Sanchez seeks out the lyrical heartbeat within any avant-garde storm… Early in her career, she zeroed in on pianist Herbie Hancock that she studied extensively. In her own terms, she also became obsessed with pianist Thelonious Monk. Wadada Leo Smith is a pure product of the ‘60s. Starting with various groups including Anthony Braxton, in the ‘80s he switched to Rastafara and africanism, back to the roots. Each of his phrases is well balanced and always to the point. In 2013, both decided to join on a Clean Feed label CD. The result is stunning and they landed a one of the best releases for 2013 award.
