Sam Rivers was a multi-instrumentalist that after playing straight-ahead Jazz, including with Miles Davis in 1964, decided to go with the Free-Jazz main stream. Working originally from 1968 to 1973 with pianist Cecil Taylor, he quickly went his own way founding a trio with Cecil McBee and Barry Altschul.
