John Surman, Stu Martin and Barre Phillips: The Trio
The Trio album is a ground breaking free jazz recording from the UK at the start of the 70s – a record that set the tone for countless other improvised records to come, The group here is a powerhouse trio – John Surman on baritone, soprano sax, and bass clarinet – plus Barre Phillips on bass and Stu Martin on drums – a player who definitely seems to inspire the other two to new heights. And although Surman and Phillips might later record in more atmospheric modes, they've definitely got a lot of energy here.
