Russian avant-garde pianist Sergey Kuryokhin
The late avant-garde pianist Sergey Kuryokhin lived through the collapse of the Soviet Union.
I met him in Santa Cruz California in the early 90’ when he toured the Western US in search of Freedom. He soon found out that the Pacific Ocean was cold and that Free Jazz was not the forte of the west coast…
Kuryokhin Free Jazz was extreme, maybe even beyond Cecil Taylor. As can be expected, there was no blues roots in the Soviet Union but strong conformist for classical music, thus an extremely abstract style.
Tonight we will feature his first 1981 recording, The Ways of Freedom that turned him into an instant star in the west.
