One of the highlight of the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival was the opening night of the Jazz Warriors series with Myra Melford's Snowy Egret band. As I have mentioned already last week, the main feature of this band was the transparent collective improvisation between two or three members of the group at a time. Myra Melford played a particularly tight solo together with drummer Tyshawn Sorey. For Melford, this was a well nurtured skill that she started 22 years ago when recording a duo with Dutch drummer Han Bennink that is known for not being happy to do simple accompaniment. So let’s explore this Eleven Ghosts CD recorded by the Swiss HatHut label in 1994.
