Gongs unlimited: Tatsuya Nakatani vs Johannes Welsch

Gongs are probably the most mysterious and fascinating music instrument. Most people think it produces only one note but the reality is totally different especially depending where the gong player hits the gong and with what stick, mallet, piece of metal, etc… Tonight we will survey two different body of works: 1. Japanese, NYC based gong player Tatsuya Nakatani that performed here in Ottawa at IMOO last September. He approaches the gongs along with various other percussion instruments and he has one difference, as a Japanese, gongs are part of the national culture and his approach is very mystical. 2. Dunrobin based gong player and sound master Johannes Welsch that has accumulated an impressive collection of gongs of all sizes and sounds right here in the Ottawa Valley. He has an almost scientific approach to gong playing and didn’t leave any rocks unturned in his infinite exploration of gong playing. This should prepare you to a live performance at the Ottawa City Hall of percussionists Jesse Stewart and Johannes Welsch at 12:15 noon, Thursday, February 11th. Admission is free.
