Roscoe Mitchell’s Nine to Get Ready

Roscoe Mitchell is a Free Jazz icon since 1966 (Sound). His most known achievements were the co-foundation of the Art Ensemble of Chicago in 1969 (A Jackson in your House) followed by a continuous flow of landmark multi-instrumental solo work (1975 Noonah) and a multitude of small bands configurations with the remaining high-priest of Free Jazz such as Anthony Braxton. But as if it wasn’t enough, Roscoe Mitchell embarked on the exploration of larger ensembles in 1979 (Creative orchestra with 18 musicians) all the way to a more mellow but even more intense adventure that feature near-symphonic music with an octet for the ECM recording (1997) Nine to Get Ready. Tonight we will explore this approach to sound texture and collective improvisation.
