Ottawa International Jazz Festival Improv Invitational picks
This is the second of a series of shows on the Ottawa International Jazz Festival’s Improv Invitational series that is particularly beefed up this year. Tonight we will focus on selection of international and Canadian artists:
• Saxophonist Peter van Huffel, a Canadian firmly settled in Berlin plays Gorilla Mask
• Vocalist Monica Akihary fuses world music to Free Jazz with her Dutch friends that include trombonist Wolter Wierbos
• Dutch Tin Men’s experiments with telephone vocal menus. A music that could sound deceptively straight ahead if it wasn’t for all the tricks they throw in. They are famous, see http://tinmenandthetelephone.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Cumhuriyet_16032013_TinMenattheTelephone_rop..jpg
• Craig Pedersen It’s a Free Country new CD release
• Rob Frayne’s Dream band
• Drummer Mike Reed’s exploration of the music of Chicago, old and avant-garde, proving that Jazz from the ‘60s is far from being dead.
• Berlin’s clarinetist/saxophonist Silke Eberhard that creatively revisits the great masters Eric Dolphy or Ornette Coleman.
