Tune into In a Mellow Tone tonight for the full Robert Glasper experience.
Host Natalie McGrath will enlighten listeners on the history, influence and musical electricity of Glasper, 45, a visionary on the piano who has redefined the boundaries of Jazz with his personal style of Hip-Hop and R&B.
Born on April 5, 1978, the Houston-born virtuoso has made a name for himself as a forward thinker, pushing the boundaries with his music through albums such as Black Radio (2012), Artscience (2016) and Dinner Party (2020).
Similar to the eccentric styles of Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper refuses to be trapped by tradition. While his roots remain in Jazz, Glasper – who is also a producer – is known for his ability to integrate different artists from a variety of genres into his music.
He defies the parameters of traditional standards in his genre and often highlights unique elements of electronic music. Much of his discography is a testament to Black culture, as he strives to use his platform to uplift the voices and experiences from his community.
Notably, he has collaborated with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Denzel Curry, H.E.R., Q-Tip, Mos Def, Mac Miller and Common. Glapser has released many albums to great acclaim, both as a soloist and as the leader of the groups, Robert Glasper Trio and Robert Glasper Experiment.
Glasper has won an Emmy award and five Grammys for his brilliant work. On top of that, he also shared an additional two Grammys with the Robert Glasper Experiment.
Tonight, Glasper will kick off his month-long residency at the Blue Note jazz club in New York City, featuring Norah Jones, Yebba, Dinner Party and more.
