John Coltrane: A Love Supreme

Released in February 1965, John Coltrane's A Love Supreme turns 50 this month. To celebrate this landmark recording, we play the album in its entirety. In the remaining time, we follow Coltrane's classic quartet through to its end in the fall of 1965. John Coltrane "classic" quartet: John Coltrane – saxophone (soprano, tenor) Jimmy Garrison – double bass Elvin Jones – drums McCoy Tyner – piano
A Love Supreme was recorded in December 1965, and released in February of the following year. Often selected by critics as one of the greatest jazz albums of all time, this album is a launching point from hard bop into the world of free jazz. This is true for both listeners and for Coltrane himself -- in the next few months, his style would change considerably.

As a side note, this is also one of the highest selling jazz albums of all time, selling over 500,000 copies according to the RIAA.

Recorded September 2, 1965 First Meditations (for Quartet) did not see release until 1977. The suite was recorded by a larger group two months later and this large group version was released in 1966. Aside from a couple of private recordings, this is the final recording made by the classic quartet. Beautiful.

yes, and it isn't even Sunday afternoon! I just left a note of thanks on the T.I.E. chat (Feb 15) as This Island Earth introduced me to all kinds of great world music--some of which ended up on my 'treadmill' and 'running' playlists as I get ready for Ottawa Race Weekend. Music is so inspiring!

Yes, TIE is one of my faves as well -- I'm not hosting much these days but still try to catch it on demand. Congrats on the Winterman run -- quite an accomplishment in this weather.

Alas, being a new parent does take its toll on a person's time. Yeah, Sunday afternoon T.I.E. hosting is unlikely to work under that circumstance. We will hold down the fort. But, it is very good to hear your voice this eve my fellow flake and weirdo brother!

I'll be back at some point. I'm really not sure how Manmohan does it. I guess he does bring his kid in to the station sometimes.

Me-thinks Manmohan is really a CGI avatar, of one of his many clones, that look just him. That's my theory at least ..... ;^)

Ha ha!!! Just catching this thread now...bring them into the studio and get them trained early...and hope they do not scream while the mica are on! Alnoor brother, controlled chaos is where it's at. I missed this show but am excited to hear it on-demand!
